My next "Coins - As Seen on TV!" write-up happens to be The Coin Vault. Sometime in December. When it comes to Coin TV, they are respectable and if you know your coins, there are good buys to be found on TCV. The key is knowing your coins. But I'm betting that anyone seriously "shopping" on any Coin TV Show/Network, doesn't. That's where things go bad for the buyer. If you do, there are some Gems to be found, albeit very rarely. I have been a TCV customer for several years, although not very often. I also buy from a number of online retailers and auction houses like Heritage and Stacks. In regards to eBay prices, you will not find any eBay prices on TCV and Coin TV in general. I am also a seller, and margins are pretty thin on eBay. They (Coin TV) can't compete with eBay sellers, and when they try, they can be very deceitful. See my write-up on Rick Tomaska's RCTV, I published on CoinTalk earlier in the year. RCTV is the worst abuser of eBay comparisons IMO. The newer and aged collectors are the target and ultimately are the losers in the deal...and by a wide margin. That's what really ticks me off! And they are the victims. As I mentioned, I will go into more detail regarding The Coin Vault in my next write-up. I analyze and grade such things as Value, Entertainment, Presentation, Customer Service, Delivery Time, Honesty, and On-Air personalities. Again, look for it in the Coin Chat Forum in December!
Norsk64 - I've read your other reviews. The only unfortunate thing is that they only appear here and not somewhere where the people who would be most likely to watch Coin Vault, and other similar programs, and buy from them would see them.
Every once in a while, when I need a good laugh, I watch a show called Coin Collecting with Mike M Just to see what he is peddling. I don't buy and never will. Way over priced imo. Worse than a used car salesman.
I disagree. Although I am enjoying your reviews, I am having trouble finding any value in them. In fact, I think that your write-ups are lending legitimacy by merely suggesting that there are items that might be worth purchasing from any of the shows you have reviewed. There are no good buys to be found on The Coin Vault, or any TV coin outlet. The overhead is too high to be able to offer anything at a discount, let alone at a reasonable price. Not even in retrospect. Virtually everything that they sell is common and overpriced.
So on a good day they were worth $100 and they were selling it for $200. That is pretty much the standard markup over retail on all the TV coin programs.
How were they advertised? I won't buy a coin unless it is listed as: GEM UNC BRILLIANT PQ BLAST WHITE OMG RARE MS++++++++++++++++++++++ MONSTER TONE ESTATE FIND GORGEOUS BETTER DATE VINTAGE
I've never been able to watch TV coin shows for more than 5 minutes without grinding my teeth. That said, I freely admit to buying the 2009 Lincoln collectors set on HSN many years ago. At the time, it was actually a good deal for MS-67 slabbed examples and certified rolls (MS-65 min) of every 2009 cent issue along with 3 free ANACS submissions. It saved me a TON of time and, after selling the free grading certs, it was a cheaper than looking for good, high-grade examples and buying them individually.
Thanks for the comment. Yes, as of now for the most part, I only post on CoinTalk. I do have a few on eBay, but nothing real recent. If there is someplace specific you feel I should include, please share.
Yes, my teeth are gone from the grinding as I watch them all and at length. I remember a similar occasion on HSN where you were given 5 ANACS submissions with purchase, and I bought in. This was a long time ago. Ultimately, I had the ANACS Coins crossover at PCGS but not without 3 of them getting a lower grade by PCGS...which really didn't surprise me. You get what you pay for I guess. Thanks for the comment!
In all fairness, Mike M does have numismatic background that has led me on a search in which I have discovered certain fallacies...ie, "IN GOD WE TRVST" on Peace dollars, the "V" was not minted to indicate victory. The coin prices are a laughing stock however. Best collecting to all.
I have had similar comments from others, so you're not alone in having that opinion. But as I've said numerous times, you've got to know your coins and watch a lot of Coin TV, which I do. Depends on the show/network. I am a seller on eBay and search out Coin TV exclusives to re-sell. And from every show/network, I have found these. Albeit very rarely, they are there. No agenda with my write-ups other than educating and informing watchers of the good, the bad, and the ugly of Coin TV. I do enjoy coins, and like to see what's going on in a different coin marketplace. But to say they all are bad and everything they sell is not worth while, is just plain wrong. Just my opinion, but I've done pretty well with the 1% of what is a good buy out there on Coin TV. Thanks for your perspective.
Yes, Mike M. is in a class all of his own. Truly stomach-turning and the "Used Car Salesman" of Coin TV!
Norsk64 - I guess the best place your reviews would do the most good would be at the bottom of the TV screen during a Coin Vault show. Fat chance of that happening.
I have a 50" TV that I use solely for playing computer games on. What's the point in spending several hundred dollars for a huge 27" monitor when you can spend $200 on a black friday special?
