I love these historical tidbits, referring to Siberian Man's info about the money made from captured Turkish guns, reminded me of some "gun money" I have bid on and not won. Here is a brief story about it from Wikipedia:

Gun money was an issue of coins made by the forces of James II during the Williamite War in Ireland between 1689 and 1691. They were minted in base metal (copper, brass or pewter), and were designed to be redeemed for silver coins following a victory by James II and consequently bore the date in months to allow a gradual replacement. As James lost the war, that replacement never took place, although the coins were allowed to circulate at much reduced values before the copper coinage was resumed. They were mostly withdrawn from circulation in the early 18th century.

The name "gun money" stems from the idea that they were minted from melted down guns. However, many other brass objects, such as church bells, were also used.

Thanks! Cayon had over 200 Carlos III gold coins in that auction, my 8 Escudos was the ONLY SC=MINT state example. Your coin still has image of Carlos IV/ I have a 1819 Popayann Mint 8 Escudos with same image! Even though Carlos IV died in 1808:inpain: Yet, I have a 1809 Lima Mint with Ferdinand VII "Imaginary Image" The French Occupation of Spain ended in 1814/ so the Colonial Mints should have had a real portrait image of the new king by 1815.

Most of my coins are British I am afraid, but this Threepence is particularly nice for 1770:

I hadn't noticed the double strike effect on the head until I took this scan. Also the dark spots in front of his face are spots, not pits and are barely visible in hand. Strange how scans reveal faults you can't see in hand.

Nice coins you have. Yes, Lima minted the imaginary portrait ( “Busto Limeño”) of Ferdinand VII, when he occupied the throne in 1808. It is because, the new stamps with the new King's bust was delayed from Spain to the Americas. For this reason "La Casa de la Moneda de Lima" decided to mint the imaginary Bust between 1808-1811. Moreover, I found this:

"The first coins issued in the name of Ferdinand VII do not bear his portrait at all, but rather that of his father, Carlos IV. This was common practice in the Colonial mints, where it usually took months or years for Madrid to send them coin dies with the portrait of the new king. Coins showing Carlos IV, with the legend FERDIN.VII, were issued in beginning in 1808 by the mints of Guatemala, Colombia, and Santiago Chile, though not in mainland Spain."
