Silly question...

I'm very new to this so please excuse this question. Is it ok to open this package to get a better look at this coin? I can't get a great picture through the plastic to try to see if this is even actually a double die. I went on the error-ref website so I want to try to figure it out but I need my close-up pics to see.

If you have a loupe, you should be able to see any doubling without the aid of a camera. However, better close-up images would help us to see if it is, in fact, a doubled die.

See if you can take a closeup of the date and mintmark, and of the motto above lincoln. If you own the coin and it is not one you can return then there is not a real reason to keep it in the 2 x 2 unless you don't have a flip or other mylar or coin protector to put it in. If you are thinking of returning the coin then probably don't remove it.

 

Also having a loupe of 4 or 7 strength should be sufficient to see, even through mylar

First of all.. Whoever put that coin im a 2x2 labeled it wrong. It's supposed to be Doubled Die and not double... Big difference! So that leads me to believe that it probably is not since the person labeled it as such.

From the error-ref.com webpage - Quote "The correct terminology for this anomaly is “doubled die” or “hub doubling”. No other term is acceptable." closed quote

Take it out. It will not hurt the coin! Just clean your hands before you do.

 

Thanks everyone! The coin is mine, my dad was a collector and I'm just now going through his stuff. I will get a loupe. I took it out of the 2x2. I have others that are in those as well, however the words vertical misaligned are spelled "verticle misalined", so I'm thinking the guy that sold these to my dad wasn't a picture of honesty. Here are some pics without the cover. I'm certainly no expert but from what I have read I'm not seeing anything?

 

I am not seeing any that I recognize on the obverse, but in looking at a book I own that details a number of errors,. My suggestion is to use a loupe to see if you can discern any separation of letters or numbers or see any indication there could be a separation at the devices. Practice taking pictures, as you may find you get enjoyment in imaging coins, and it is a skill that is more readily appreciated nowadays. You can post better pics here in this thread also, lots of people are willing to help.

 

Also be aware that some doubled die coins are quite minor. Values differ depending on each instance.

 

Thank you for the info! I'm still working on learning how to post good pics. I also will probably go on the error-ref website again and read more about the doubled die and other subjects. My Red Book is on the way so that will help too!

I have been searching the forum to try to find out how the pictures on here are so clear. I am shocked to see that people are just using their iPhones. I have been using my good Sony camera but my pictures stink. I'm going to try to make some sort of setup to take better pictures.

Thank you for that. I read through it and it was very informative! I read a thread about setups using an iPhone. It had pictures as well. People on CT are so helpful! I will probably try that first just because I have everything and can do that tomorrow but certainly the more I learn and get into all these coins I will want something that can take super closeup shots. Awesome info. Thank you!

 

I'm glad you found it helpful, I cannot help you when it comes to using your phone.
We have a quite a few members that have gotten real good at photographing coins with their phones.
I'm sure these members will come forward and give you a hand.
This old Marine still uses a good old flip phone,

If anything to remember, (lighting)- (background).
Not as much background more on lighting.
We have quite a few members on coin talk that take very good photos.
