Has NGC Gone Overboard with Slabbing

It’s really just the Wild West association with silver and some submitter wanted it. I don’t mind it but I do think the facsimile signatures are very meh and I’m not a fan of those. Real signatures I like and obviously some people aren’t still alive for those, but a printed signature just doesn’t appeal to me

You are all missing the point of these specialty labels. It's about making money! For the submitter AND NGC/PCGS.

Well, with all the (semi-)famous and notorious people who've died this week...

    Charles Manson ASE

David Casidy ASE (this one could repurpose the chip from a hallmark card - instead of changing the battery, you would need to reholder it)

That's a million dollar idea right there. That is way better than a cardboard map with holes.

You put some gold plated quarters in those holders and a late night TV slot.....the sky is the limit.

Frankly, those stupid, often totally unrelated labels, can turn me off on a coin. I know it’s the coin and not the label but some of this stuff is just inane.

These labels wouldn't exist if people didn't buy them. Has NGC gone too far or have collectors?

    I'm pretty anti-slab so I'm biased...

I had mentioned somewhere earlier this year that there were more label types available for 2017 ASEs than there were years in which ASEs were made. I can't remember if this was for NGC or PCGS. At any rate, while I find this absolutely silly, I'm thankful for the people that pay the money for it, as it keeps the costs of other services that I use from going up faster.

I'll be buying an uncirculated 2018 ASE at my earliest convenience, and it'll be going into my Dansco album.

I'm looking for a whole blasted 'roll' at an agreeable price. Not yet.......wait and see......

Have they gone overboard? Maybe a little for my personal tastes, but they are a business with a product that has been selling. They will continue to expand their product in the hopes of making more money and so far they appear to be doing so. Until that is no longer the case, I think we will see this trend continue.

Yeah, I've never understood the grading of non-circulating bullion coins either.

    It's called marketing.

    No, it's sales.

Marketing is the identification of a need that can be filled.

Of course, today - like everything else - it's all smushed together.

It's good business. Ever notice what many of the countries of the world have been doing for years now to sell coins? Meteorites, gold, gems, clovers, etc. are part of the coins. I'm waiting for a "scratch-and-sniff" Westminster Dog Show Anniversary coin.

You can bet your life that there will be a coin that lights up in a year or two! The Cook Is. 2019 Christmas tree, 2 oz silver $300 denomination with a lighted tree design. Just watch.

I have a set of silver eagles. All raw and in a wooden coin cabinet. I am very old.

    "New improved... same great taste."

I once saw a 12 ounce bottle of salad dressing that had a starburst on it bragging,

"CONTAINS 50% MORE THAN THE 8 OZ SIZE!"

    It cost 50% more, also.

I admit to being a former advertising copywriter. It's a dirty world.

Pretty desperate when your big deal of the day is selling a coin that doesn't even exist yet. Now THAT's rare.
