I just bought this raw off E-Bay, please give me your thoughts on what grade you think it is and vote in the attached poll.
Just testing the waters on this. Lowered my vote by one grade to MS64RD. Think that hit at bottom portion of reverse below right wheat stalk may hold it back a grade.
Nice die crack on obverse lower left. I like the red/orange tone on back and I see no visible wear except T on reverse and just lateral of eye the hair looks touched. My GUESS is MS 64 (63 +1 for eye appeal)
OMG!! Is that a LMP CP'd from GSC? Someone let LP know ASAP... Sorry, feeling a bit silly tonight. I think it could 64+RB. I think there are just a few too many contact marks to go 65, but it certainly seems to have the luster to possibly take it there. The spots on the obverse detract from the eye appeal, otherwise it would almost certainly go 65. It's a very nice Lincoln Cent for a raw purchase. I hope you got a great deal on it.
I'm going out on a limb here but I know this is a safe space and everyone will be supportive if I'm wrong: 65RB
For the money, that's a gem. The cuts blend well in the toning and are hardly very distracting. For my eyes, the spots are more distracting than the cuts. I gave that pretty boy MS65RB.
I'm curious, what about the color is bothering you? I don't see anything related to color that would make it market unacceptable.
The color looks perfectly natural and nice to me. I’m a fan of subtle toning like this. I went MS-64 RB. Because of the light toning, it can’t be called a RD, and the hit at two o’clock is very distracting to me. Though I’ll admit that 64 may be a bit tough for one so well struck with such a nice overall look.
Your grade matches identically with mine and I paid MS64RB money for it. I gave my circulated VDB to my nephew and needed one for my Dansco. I saw this one and was taken by the eye appeal so I grabbed it up.
I believe PCGS has stated that their standards for Red, Red Brown and Brown are defined as. RED = 95% or greater in original Red surfaces, BROWN = less than 5% original Red surfaces and everything falling between is RED BROWN. It's still kinda subjective, but it gives you at least an idea of where they are.
