  1. Can any one tell me why in the Redbook the 2011, 2013, 2014 dated 14 piece proof sets sold for 31.95 and are now valued at around 35 dollar while the 2012 14 piece set sold for the same 31.95 but is valued at 150 dollars???

The Redbook coin prices are already a 6 months to a year old when published. The 2012 set is as stated above, Supply and Demand, as 747,000 were minted. Most years are above a million.

When you see such discrepancies as this, you are observing market forces at work.

It all boils down to supply and demand. The 1999 Silver sets did the same thing going up to near $300 or more before supply became greater than demand and they came back down to the $70 level.

Perhaps someone has a theory on why the demand is so high for these and why the supply isn't meeting it?

If you find a silver 2012 proof set for 150.00, I suggest you buy it. Welcome to CT.

  7. So where is best place to find prices. I checked out an 2018 Redbook from library; but am looking to get something myself to keep.

On line or gray sheets that are weekly or monthly. I use Coin World's or Coins monthly pricing. Some people use Ebay sales pricing.

  9. Where do I find those??

I would suggest you download a few coin apps to help you with market pricing and quick research. I use Photograde, Coinfacts, NGC, Coinflation, PCGS set registry and Price Guide.

Photograde is great for aiding you in grading your coins (excluding obvious cleaning)
Price Guide is for what is a coin worth (retail prices) and Coinfacts gives historical data & facts and finally Coinflation shows you how the market is doing at any given time.

Hey, Tony, pricing of coins is a highly debated issue not only on CoinTalk, but everywhere. Coins are worth what you can get for them. That being said, the factors that set these prices are complex and subjective. For the average collector, I think pricing through e-bay sold items is probably the best. You have to pay for the grey sheet and most other pricing sources are not necessarily accurate for what you can either buy or sell for.

  15. Thanks I will start checking these out.

I hate stupid questions. And yes, there is such a thing. In fact a preponderance of questions are stupid. Except yours of course!

Thank you, however I readily admit my ignorance...my stupidity however I usually think is humorous. Give the OP a break, he is admitting he is trying to learn. :)

Ignorance is even more prevalent! Especially between my big ears. Not dumb, not stupid, just ignorant. OP should rephrase his title "another ignorant question..."

Ignorance can be cured, stupidity is often deliberate...
