    What's up errbody?

My niece came over today and was telling me about some coins that she has from Canada and the US.

I started thinking about what I could get her for Christmas and I thought that it's about time I introduced her to the wonderful world of ancients! headbang.gif

I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions about what I could get her.

    Thanks dudes and dudettes!

Hi Erin, a denarius of Caesar. Just kidding! :)

Maybe a Constantine type? That way if she loses it you can always get her another one...

    Erin,
My daughter started getting into ancients about 3 years ago when she was 7. I remember that she was very excited to get an ancient coin with an owl on it because she was reading the Harry Potter series.

Nowadays (at age 10) she is still interested in ancients and tends to gravitate toward younger roman emperors like Gordian III and Geta or coins with Athena or Hercules.
    Hope this helps,
    David

How about a nice denarius of one of the 5 good emperors? Affordable and very interesting historically. You could also get her a coin with a woman on it from the same time period.

Severina Augusta was a fascinating lady and was likely the only woman to hold the imperial title in her own name. Her coins are very affordable!

If she is coming from modern collecting she might be expecting larger coins than ancients tend to be. The early antoniniani are affordable silver coins that still feel great in hand. Philip I or Gordian III are good candidates that have some nice coins at great prices.

    Thanks everybody!

    She's 11.

I have a limited budget, but I want to try and get a coin with a bit of a wow factor.

I'm not sure what she's learned about history so far. But, she's obviously going to come across ancient history at some point.

I also have to deal with my sister and bro in law who are going to 'know' that I'm giving her a 'fake' coin. :banghead:

    Erin

I haven't purchased it yet, ro. I'm looking for ideas.

How about a nice Greek bronze with a Pegasus or Hippocampus reverse, maybe Athena or Artemis/Diana obverse? Eleven year olds study Greek/Roman mythology and love those stories. What a show&tell!Ones like these don't look too fake.[IMG][IMG]

Star of Bethlehem. On Christmas, this coin would match well.

My first was coin was a nice Constantine the second, campgate, and it made for fine first coin! Very affordable and the simple but yet intriguing campgate reverse was great. Here's the spec's-

    Roman Imperial

Constantine II, as Caesar 317-337 A.D.AE Follis. 325-326 A.D. Antioch Mint Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust, l.CONSTANTINVS IVN NOB Campgate surmounted by two turrets, star above; In ex.: SMANTSPROVIDEN-TIAE CAESSRIC VII 65

    Thanks,
    Jacob

    Everybody has such great ideas!

Unfortunately, $60 is a bit out of my budget. I'm working with $20-25. I know I won't get anything spectacular at that price, but I want something that will, hopefully spark a real interest in ancients.

It would totally pwn if she could do a presentation including the coin someday.

Ancients are really interesting, but people are often put off by their small size. A Byzantine coin has bulk and history and doesn't have to be too expensive.

Wolf and twins of the Urbs Roma type. High grade might be too much but something like this might work.

I can't help getting into finding a first gift ancient for a child. i was given one at 14 that changed my life! now I use my ancients with my students when we study the Latin/Greek root words of English vocab in class.

People vary. My daughter does not want my collection when I pass but she does want my Greek silver group under 10mm.
