The photos make it look cleaned to me, but that might just be because they're bad photos. There is some evidence of luster, and if it were cleaned in the way it appears, that wouldn't be there.

The seller does offer a 14-day return policy, so you'd only be out $10 or so for shipping and return shipping if you want to examine it in-hand.

Having said that, I won't be bidding on it. It's a potential opportunity that isn't tempting to me.

    Thank for the help.

The only way I have to test my knowledge is to run things by people who know what they're doing. I found the ad to be questionable because the luster doesn't look entirely convincing - almost as if a little remains and the photographer is working really hard to bring it out.

I found this very helpful as well:

I'm getting better at detecting cleaned coins - found myself flipping through coins on eBay the other day saying .... cleaned.... cleaned.....cleaned.... when just a few weeks ago those would have been attractive to me.

And to think this young gent managed to beat our beloved, vaunted Patriots in both these teams' meetings in a Super Bowl! Go figure.

The Giants are debatably the luckiest team in Super Bowl history; aside from this, just think Scott Norwood. ;)

With all due respect, I would suggest you not place absolute faith in this video or this fellow's claims. I'm not saying it's a worthless video, but there's simply a number of unnecessarily vague and/or questionable statements made, from his too modest estimate regarding the impact cleaning can have upon value to his suggestion that there is a "right" cloth used to clean coins.

Unfortunately, there's a LOT of utter crap on YouTube masquerading as solid knowledgeable and/or genuinely experienced advice, often coming from those who care more about subscribers and clicks than they do about the potential damage such "advice" can cause. You're much better off participating here; even if this place has more than it's fair share of BS spewed, it also has the benefit of numerous truly knowledgeable members usually willing to call it out. Regrettably, identifying such members from those simply playing the part isn't quite as easy, but in time hopefully you'll learn to separate the wheat from the chaff (so to speak).

    Thank you.

First, I agree with your 'too modest estimate' - in talking with my dad (who is also new to this) it seems in our limited experience that 40% or more the norm.

Secondly, if you have any videos you'd recommend I'd like to view them.

I'm already talking with my dad about traveling to a coin show and taking classes on grading coins. We'll never be experts but if we can cut our burn rate down from 90% to 10% that would be fantastic.

This has been an informative thread for both of us.

Most of the valuable raw coins will be on there, that's why they're still raw.

I just don't like the way the lighting is utilized. Just place it in natural lighting and take pictures at different angles. IMO it looks cleaned at one point, but again I'm still learning.

Don't buy a real expensive coin on Ebay that isn't graded by a reputable company, that will eliminate your fear Sir.

Didn't watch the video Books, but the guy really said that ????

Gregg, given that, don't ever even look at another video by that guy !

He did indeed. Towards the end, perhaps with 50 seconds remaining, he mentions "there are those who carelessly work on these who don't use the right type of cloth" (paraphrased).

In fact, if you care to watch it, you'll see there was a lot more said that's "questionable" than I mentioned. Not all of it was that bad, but for a guy openly offering to give personal advice and/or screen coins for others? Not a chance....

For those of you following this little drama the Peace Dollar sold for $222.50.
Graysheet has those in very good condition at $200.00.

Evidently, cleaning really knocks the value right out of a coin, such that a supposed BU went for nearly very good prices.

I'm not ever going to clean a coin.
That whole thing really, really bothers me.

I have seen 2 '1928' peace at shows that were suspect as they looked and later was confirmed as having the "S" of a 1928S Peace removed. The photo is not convincing to me. A coin of this value should be bought properly slabbed or in hand only ( unless Ebay routines are OK with you ). Unless the seller lives on your street I guess also :)

Giants weren't lucky beating the Patriots. The Defense was all over Brady. The D should've got the MVP

It was largely luck, as good as their D played the Pats dropped an INT that Samuel Bill Bucknered with a 1 minute left in the 4th that would have sealed the game.

I love how you conveniently ignored the example given for one not mentioned. Still, if you look at the whole, it wasn't an unreasonable statement, nor was it intended as an insult.

I hang out here to avoid inane banter about the NFL.
You guys are killing the only refuge I have from that nonsense.

Please submit your apology in the form of an uncirculated Peace Dollar.
