Was handed this for change at work, it's a Monticello nickel with only the tails side by lightly imprinted. Any information is appreciated.
Measure it beside another same type nickel 99.9% sure its been grinded down on 1 side. I had a similiar foreign coin. Im positive it will will be smaller thickness than the test coin because of one side being grinded down. Chris
Note that the rim is gone. That tells you the coin was ground down, machined. It's just damage. No way it left the mint in this condition.
Just by the circular look in the middle I can tell it was ground down. Also, As stated.. No upraised rim. That is a damaged Nickel. Sorry Not a Mint Error.
Coins are Struck/Minted not printed. Paper Currency is Printed If you understood the Minting process you would know that enough pressure has to be applied on both sides to create the image. You can't have one side with an image and another without because of not enough striking pressure on that side.
There are Mint Errors known as Struck Through Capped Die that cause one side of a Nickel to appear blank but have a slight image that looks blurry. These have an upraised rim. Here are 2 attributed and certified examples from my collection -
I was wondering about mine as well I have the heads side it was in my coins jarbof random coins. Don't remember where I got it.
Pictures? But almost certainly another case of one side having been ground off. Unless by some chance it does happen to turn out to be something else value is 5 cents.
