I couldn't resist this coin. It's a type I would never be able to afford if it were perfect. I have been wanting a William I (The Conqueror) for a long time and a sword type was the one I wanted but the prices are usually over $1K.

From the book A History of Medieval Coinage in England by Richard Kelleher
"This type marks the first appearance on a sword on an English coin. However it does not need to signify a wholly warlike demeanour as the sword also played a prominent role in the coronation service. An 11th century manuscript reveals the words which accompanied the giving of the sword to the new king "Receive this sword, which is bestowed on thee with the blessing of God".

Great coin @alde with great historical appeal. I'm sure the Saxons were less than thrilled to see William, sword in hand, on the coinage. I wish I had one of his coins to post, but I've still to get a William I.

The closest I have is his son, Henry I.

Thats a great coin for type. I was lucky enough to get a Tealby penny last year. Mine is minted by RICARD ON CAN (Richard of Canterbury)

Oooo... both WI and a Tealby! I'm quite envious. Both are high on my list

They were high on mine too. I find these early English coins and the history around the fascinating.

Yup! Several of my coins are like that. Got this baby for $30 because of its condition. Sold one in worse condition for $100 to Bob Reis.
