That is an epic coin! We want to know what coins Lord M got in exchange, it had to be something good. If there was pizza involved there must have been beer as well! John
Great coin @Aethelred I can see why you missed it. Rudyard Kipling wrote a great poem about Aethelred and his payments to the Danes. Dane-Geld - Rudyard Kipling It is always a temptation to an armed and agile nation To call upon a neighbour and to say: -- "We invaded you last night--we are quite prepared to fight, Unless you pay us cash to go away." And that is called asking for Dane-geld, And the people who ask it explain That you've only to pay 'em the Dane-geld And then you'll get rid of the Dane! It is always a temptation for a rich and lazy nation, To puff and look important and to say: -- "Though we know we should defeat you, we have not the time to meet you. We will therefore pay you cash to go away." And that is called paying the Dane-geld; But we've proved it again and again, That if once you have paid him the Dane-geld You never get rid of the Dane. It is wrong to put temptation in the path of any nation, For fear they should succumb and go astray; So when you are requested to pay up or be molested, You will find it better policy to say: -- "We never pay any-one Dane-geld, No matter how trifling the cost; For the end of that game is oppression and shame, And the nation that pays it is lost!"
Stunning coin @Aethelred! And what a wonderful feeling it must be to have an old friend back in the fold. Recently I tried recovering a sorely missed coin I sold to a fellow collector a few years ago but could not come to such a satisfactory conclusion. I'm glad your deal worked out better than mine!
Wow Michael, I sure am glad you were able to strike a deal to get that coin back - I've much admired it ever since I saw it the first time. Congrats!
Extremely nice coin! Glad it found its way back home. I need to grab one at some point with the peck marks on the reverse (they add character). @Aethelred I'm also in NC! We should meet up at some point!
Hmph. You buy the stinkin' thing back and get 31 replies so far in your post about it. I got a grand total of ONE reply to MY thread about it. Well, that's a big one gone from my Eclectic Box. It was in my Top Three for the four years I proudly owned it. But it was (and is) your namesake, "signature" coin, so it is back where it belongs.* And our "tab" is settled, so it's time to start a new one! Maybe next year, I won't be so in hock to you and put myself in such a precarious bargaining position, eh? * PS- really, I was astonished when you offered it to me in 2013. You got a bit too absorbed with ancients! You know where it has to go if you ever part with it again. PPS- Do I have to update my Eclectic Box thread now? I think I'll wait until the next newp. At least I can hold on to the picture of it for a little while, right?
Pizza, yes. Beer, no. I've been a lifelong teetotaler for all of my 50+ years. @Aethelred is not, but is pretty moderate. Actually, I've never seen him touch the stuff, either, but I've heard he's not averse to a Guinness now and then. In return, I got lots and lots of much cheaper (but fun) stuff to play around with, resell, and give away. And, more importantly, I cleared away the largish tab I had run up in my account with Ye Olde Dead King. It was time to balance the books. We usually settle up once a year when I go visit.
