Hello everybody! I joined Coin Talk after being recommended by Lord Marcovan. I'm not really into ancients, but he is and I figured I'd post in here as my first thread.

I like mostly US coins, but have a strong interest in Mexican and British coins.
I look forward to meeting a lot of you. Some probably will recognize me from Collector's Universe. I'm a longtime member there.

Here's a picture of one of my favorite coins (to show off and try out the picture posting feature) :)

Well, you should be into ancients considering how much your modern coins have been influenced by ancients.

Here is the angel of your Libertad

And look at the reverse of this Maximinus Thrax denarius, at the Victoria Augusta....see the similarities? Now you see where the inspiration for the modern Libertad came from. Take away the palm branch from the ancient one and they are almost identical.

And for the eagle holding a snake, I understand that was an Aztec thing, but if a coiner wanted to know how to depict it on a modern coin, look at ancient coinage for inspiration.

    Here's yours

This ancient from Kamarina depicts an owl sideways grasping a gecko. Its very similar to yours. Mine is rather small and hard to see, but others here have better coins of Kamarina, and I hope they post them so you can really see the similarity with the reverse of your Mexican coin.

Plus eagles grasping objects was very popular in ancient coinage, especially wreaths (which is very comparable to the eagle depictions you'll also see in the back of your US coins from the 1800s and early 1900s) as the modern coiners were inspired by the ancient coiners.

Oh, and I wont judge you for collecting modern stuff. After all, I've been collecting poured silver bars lately.

And I even have some of these poured silver skull bars coming in the mail.

    Welcome @asheland

I like to collect some world coins as well as ancients. I don't have much from the US or Mexico, but I have several UK coins.
