The following is Bronze coin from Nemausis(Nîmes,Gaul) cut it two halves "AS",thus creating small change. Heads of Augustus and Agrippa, reverse:"COL-NEM P P", showing crocodile attached to palm tree (probably celebrating conquest of Egypt) .Interesting: a cross was marked at the lower part of Agrippa's head, to show where the coin was to be cut. Misfired: the cut resulted on another axis !
Interesting coin! This type of coin seemed to be halved a lot more than others. Small denominations must have been in short supply. I have some small change of this type as well. I really like these COL NEM types and someday will spring for a top-notch example.
You are right: apparenly these coins of Nemausus appear to be the most subject to be split into halves !
I find it interesting that the coins were struck without consistent orientation between the dies so halved examples can be found with either head backed by either end of the croc or even with a whole or absent croc. I do not have anything approaching the whole set. I can not recall seeing one with no croc at all and a strong tree top. Caesar with head end Augustus with whole body missing tail
I have one that it looks like they started a cut for change... but, maybe they just added another chicken to the order: Lucania Paestum (Poseidoneia) 218-201 BCE AE Semuncia Poseidon-Dolphin (started cut for change) Craw 4-1
