The world's ugliest Ike $

I downloaded the Photograde grading app for my iphone because I like the convenience of having grading examples available to me when I'm out coin-hunting. I was poking through it looking at many of the pics and I found my way to the Eisenhower Dollar section. I assumed that it would only have MS60 and higher. I was entirely surprised to find that it started with Ike's in Poor-1 and Fair-2 condition! Given that these coins absolutely did NOT circulate, I have to assume that these were artificially worn to prove a point.

But once you see the pics, I think you'll agree that the Ike is possibly the ugliest coin ever produced by the US Mint! I always thought it was ugly just as a general rule but in extremely worn condition, it looks even less appealing!

In Poor-1, poor Dwight (pun intended) looks like he doesn't even want to be on the coin.

They did circulate, in slot machines. Many of these P01 Ikes were products of 1960's-80's Vegas & Reno casinos as well ones used as pocket pieces. That's not to say that some weren't quickly and artificially worn down by mechanical means though.

I've seen many Kennedy Halfs that have spent time in the casino slot machines. But never Ike's. Of course, by the time I was old enough to visit a casino, the transition to SBA's had already occurred.

I found this one searching a bag of Ike's a while back:

I thought the same thing. I heard there is a market for these types of coins and people pay decent money for them as well.

There is and people will...but not for that price. The seller is hoping to find a fool.

I'm sure. I see that all the time when I look at the social media ads and some of the other marketplaces that utilize apps on your phone. I just can hope that nobody pays that for the coins that are up for sale.

I guess you guys aren’t aware of the “poor mans” registry sets. Some will pay ridiculous money for legitimate PO-01 coins. Check out what some of the Morgan’s are going for.

I'm very aware of them...some people collect them and do pay good money for them. I just think that $1000 for an Ike is more than the going rate.

Depends on how rare a certain year/mint is in p01 vs how many serious lowball registry guys with money to burn there are. Registries are nothing more than a pissing contest and something to do.

That is true. You get a couple people that really want it and the skies the limit I suppose.

The price paid for a P01 of any coin should never exceed the value of the original coin, unadulterated, + a rock tumbler...

You should crack and try and wear it down to a P-01 blank and then the cleaning would disappear too. Bam, probably 6 figure coin

Low ball collectors and collecting is a very real thing and can have big premiums. There's nothing sad about people collecting what they enjoy
