I've been wanting to hang a coin related poster on my wall for a long time now. So after thinking of something fun to do, I decided that a toned Carson City Morgan Set would look really good and I could keep the coin sizes decent enough that they could be seen from a few feet away. Unfortunately, I have not been lucky enough to have had the pleasure to photograph all of the CC coins, let alone toned. So, since this is a personal use project and I am not selling the poster or using the images for any commercial gain, I made use of some fantastic images from PCGS CoinFacts. Thankfully PCGS is very generous in allowing the public to download high resolution images for personal use. I decided on a final size of 24x36 for this poster. I went through and chose toned coins that would look good together. My personal preference for toned coins is not the wild neon rainbow, but a little different. If you've seen a lot of my toned Morgan Dollars that I post, then you have an idea of what my taste is. I've used the obverse and Reverse of each date. I did only one example for each year and excluded the major varieties to keep it simple. I was able to show the coins at double actual size, so each coin in the final print will be 3 inches in diameter. I went with a bit of a Western theme since these coins were minted in the pinnacle of the "Wild West" days. This was done using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. The image below is around 1/6th the actual size, but you can get an idea of the detail available. I hope you enjoy seeing it as much as I enjoyed putting it together. I would appreciate any feedback or comments you have.
Thanks, I've been sick for the last week and a half and I've been coughing so much, I sound like a bloodhound on the trail of a raccoon.. So I was bored and had lot's of time on my hands.
I just uploaded the full resolution file of the poster. Those of you who would like to see it just click on the link below. http://www.wildlightphotoworkshops....City_Morgan_Dollar_Poster_Full_Resolution.jpg
Very nice setup. I really like the layout and matching of the coins. But a numismatic question: Why are the 1889 CC, 1892 CC, and 1893 CC Morgans so much more expensive than the 1881 CC? Does it have something to do with the GSA hoard?
I think a lot of it has to do with the surviving population. With roughly half of the 1881-CC mintage coming out of the GSA hoard, that would explain a lot. On a side note, I noticed that my Official Black Book has a typo on the mintage for the 1881-CC that I used for my mintage number. It should be 296,000 not 206,000 that I typed in. I had two other books I could have referenced and would have had the correct number. Oh well.. Easy to fix.
Sheesh!!! I should throw that Black Book away. The mintage reported within it on the 1893-CC was bad too. It list's the '93-CC as a mintage of 667,000 and every other source I find shows 677,000. Now I know where "Fake News" come from. LOL Alway's get a second source.
It's amaizing the amount of creative talent that will come forward by time of sickness. What a beautiful poster. you should list them for sale. i would purchase one. Thank you for displaying them
Yes, a very cool poster, but PCGS wouldn't permit selling these. They hold the rights to the images on a tight leash. You can use pictures you've had them take to sell the coins and to share with others, but not much else. You probably also need to leave the PCGS background in place. I think @WingedLiberty got his hand slapped for setting up a web page exhibiting his toned proof Lincolns using TrueViews, so making and selling posters of this, neat as they'd be, would be out of the question.
Before I opened this i thought for sure i would see that toned GSA i sold you a while back. Although i cant even remember what date it was . (?) What ever happened to that coin? You sell it ?
