Three things I've been very interested in ever since my later childhood: airplanes, space travel and coin collecting. And as far as what I've done with that, well, as Meatloaf once sang, "Two out of three ain't bad." Interesting footnote (for the airplane buffs among us): In the 1950's I twice to flew round trip from Europe to the U.S. via the TWA Lockheed Super-Constellation, once Vienna to New York and back and the second time Frankfurt to New York and return, the first time via the Azores and Newfoundland, the second time via Shannon and Newfoundland, both trips roughly twelve hours each way. Those were the glory days of really comfortable flying!
1. Constellation? COOL!!! 2. I've read about those days. So jealous.... But it was also fairly expensive and not as safe.
Thanks. Now as to flying being a pricey proposition back in those days, it wasn't really that bad when you compare it to what they charge for Trans-Atlantic Business Class these days, a level of air transportation which isn't all that much superior to the seating and meals that were offered to all passengers back then. And as far as safety goes, all I know from personal experience is that when we once were in a terrifically violent thunderstorm and had to circle the Azores for over an hour before the pilot got the o.k. to land, even flying in that very miserable weather that amazing example of aircraft engineering just continued to hum along like a charm.
