This is in my sell pile... this thing looks like it got run over by a horse-drawn wagon carrying a load of gold ingots. Still, I'm curious if that crack on the reverse is PMD or something else. Thanks!
It looks like the coin was bent at one time, then straightened. The crack is probably due to metal fatigue, work hardening, or something like that. (Where's a metallurgist when you need one?). Don't forget that the 3 cent silver was a unique alloy at 75% Silver and 25% Copper, so the malleability may be different than other coinage compositions.
@Lunchbox John I had that guess, I actually knew something about a coin! Ha i'm doing it, i'm learning.
We have some good info in here tonight. I was going to say exactly what @Oldhoopster said. It was folded in half during it's life and then someone flattened it back out again.
