I was taking pics of coins I picked up last weekend and this weekend and found this. It’s difficult for me to image but it’s a proof like maundy 2 pence dated 1859. The legend reads “BEITANNIAR”. I didn’t find any info in my Spink book and google wasn’t any help either. Does anybody know anything about it? British experts, is this error of great interest or is it just mildly amusing? Thanks
It seems like that that was the description that was used up to 1860 according to all the google searches I can find. https://www.ngccoin.com/price-guide...ce-km-729-1838-1887-cuid-1165610-duid-1322759 EDIT: I Just noticed the spelling error.
In my book, British Commonwealth Coins, there were 4, 158 silver Maundy sets (1, 2, 3 & 4 pence silvers) minted for 1859 .. the same number as from 1838-1868 annually. They quit minting circulation silver 2 pence in 1820. Is the first letter in the misspelled Brittannia a B or an R?
It's not a fake. It may be an error that was caught so few exist, or an error that wasn't discovered until they were finished minting, so they're all like this. Needs to be researched some more. Good pick up.
There is an 1859 Maundy set on eBay for sale, and the 2 pence is spelled the same, BEITANNIAR. Looks like a die punch error. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Queen-Vict...243233?hash=item33d5335521:g:i2EAAOSwNSxVNsDo
I have found several of the Maundies with edge errors in the 1850-2 year range. I think it of value, though not like the RRITANNIAR currency 3d.
