Hi All, I recently got these Cherronesos hemidrachms in the mail and was hoping to get some feedback. They look a little funny, but are from a seller I trust. The first one is especially weird--in addition to the funny-looking lion, it has crazy high relief on the reverse pellets). They're each about 16mm at the widest. Any ideas? #1- 2.2 g #2 2.4g
Thracian Chersonesos AR Hemidrachm, 13mm, 2.0g; c. 386-338 BC. Obv.: Forepart of lion right, head reverted. Rev.: Quadripartite incuse square with alternating raised and sunken quarters; monogram in sunken one quarter, pentagram in opposite quarter. Reference: McClean 4071. Ex JAZ You're weight is ok, the photo color looks kinda off and there is a lot of fakes. If you trust the seller enough. Somewhere I have a link that @John Anthony gave me, I'll hunt for it.
Here's the link, has some interesting stuff, worth the read http://rg.ancients.info/lion/cherronesos.html

Smojo-- The yellowish color is just in the photo. The lamp in my living room does that and I've always had a hard time figuring out the white balance. Great link, by the way. I think my second coin might actually match up with the first one on that page. What I thought were weird flow lines on a pellet might actually be the crest on a Corinthian helmet, which is really cool. The other, weirder coin looks like a pretty good match for one of the barbarous hemidrachms on your linked page. The star on your coin is pretty great, by the way. Bing--I've been wanting one of these for quite a while, but rarely spend more than thirty-five dollars on a coin, which severely limits my options when it comes to anything but LRBs. I manage, and have a pretty varied collection, but it means I spend a lot of time trolling listings and that I have more than a few coins other people would call problem coins.
