Hi guys, I'm new to coin collecting. I made some researches but I can't seem to find any information on the most expensive Chinese coin. Does anyone know? It must be from the Republic as most ancient Chinese coins are cheap. I skimmed through the 2009 Standard Catalog of World Coins (1901 - 2006). The most expensive is a 1926 Silver Dollar K#604 at 150,000. I might have skipped some.
I would be very careful stepping into the scarcer Chinese coin market. Anything that is even the slight bit scarce has been heavily copied/faked. You would have to become very skilled at detecting forgeries from Big Tree and other fake manufacturers. The Chinese are making counterfeits, some VERY accurate, of most country's scarcest/rarest coins. Be careful!
WOW. What a set! Yep. Sad but true. I steer clear of Chinese coins unless they're something like inexpensive cash coins I can get for two or three bucks or less. But that's a personal choice. I'm sure there are lots of appealing possibilities for collecting Chinese coins for those who want to do it, and are aware of the pitfalls. After all, PCGS has set up operations in China, so there's one level of protection.
