I found this in my small collection of wheat pennies.

I agree. PMD - Post Mint Damage

To bad about the damage, as I believe this to be a DDO, more than likely the 001

What exactly are you seeing that allowed you to come to this conclusion? Honest question.

Yes, invariably PMD, but still interesting.

Can anyone tell what year it could be?
1945? 47? (I'm not to sure about DDO)

    43. ;)

    I kid, I kid...

    Seriously though, I'm guessing it's most likely a 45.

That is the result of penny-pinching.

1947 - look closely and you can clearly see the top of the '7'

And what about the "tail" that just happens to so closely resemble a damaged-yet-proper 5?

Well, there were several points that made me curious, so I looked to see if there was one listed with the characteristics I was seeing. It is definitely a '45, so I looked for a match. The points I recognized were there but some others are damaged beyond verification, one being the hit to the leg of the nine that I circled. The arrows point to the points that I noticed that made me want to look it up. 20171031_181732.jpg 20171031_181209.jpg

Wow. I looked at the picture on a different computer and now I clearly see a 5. It looks like a smashed 5, but definitely a 5.

    I don't see any doubling.

How does the rim fold over like that?

It looks as if two planchets sandwiched and one split at the rim.

But it seems to be PMD... just cut at the edge, split, and folded right?

It just took a hit. No way to ever know exactly.

It's just been to the school of hard knocks. All post-minting damage.

OK - This is a bit strange. Now I'm on yet a third computer and the number looks like a 3. I guess that's why different people are saying they are seeing the different numbers. It could very well depend on just how your monitor is adjusted and displaying the image. However, between the 7, 5 and 3 I see on different computer monitors, I'll go with the 5.

And the way that rim is folded is very interesting. I wish there was just that fold and the rest of the penny wasn't so banged up.
