Has anyone one seen the four designs for the 2009 Lincoln Cent series? I think Victor David Brenner would roll over in his grave. What is everyone's opinion? That's mine, and you know what they say about opinions : )

Yes I have seen them. I think they are ugly!

So are the new Pres dollars. To me they look like a piece of candy that you give away on Haloween. We got gipped out of the chocolate though

I think the most beautiful coin ever made was the Standing Liberty Dollar
That is a very pretty coin!

Also makes a good case for saving all your pennies doesnt it?

I think the big problem with all of the new designs is that the sketches we see are always shaded and when the shading is there, they don't look too bad. But when you put that image on a coin there is no shading, just the important outlines, and that makes it look flat and unappealing.

My point is aren't these 100th year coins supposed to honor Lincoln? Why not focus on the things that he is well known for: The Gettysburg Address, The Emancipation Proclamation, maybe even an image of seating area in Ford's theater with the flag draped over it where he was assassinated, and possibly his birthplace in a small log cabin to insinuate how far he had come in order to inspire others (the log cabin is one of the proposed designs). All of these periods and hallmarks in history have had a dramatic effect on how our country has developed and changed over the past 140 years. Who cares about his political career in Illinois where he failed to win an election 4 or 5 times in a row. Yes he stuck to his guns and eventually succeeded, but I would like to see his major achievements highlighted as well as his death that shocked the nation at the time. As an avid, almost insane collector of Lincoln Cents, I feel very passionate about this. Maybe others don't and that's fine. Boy am I hungry now, does anyone have any of those foil wrapped chocolate dollars I can eat : )

I believe the last I heard was that the designs were NOT completely finalized and accepted yet. Has something changed or are they still debating what the final designs will be?? Thanks. David.

    Rim,

    Thanks for the pics.

Can't say I totally like or dislike them. Most defintely different but wonder how well they will really translate onto a cent planchet.

In reality, I know what most people think of Lincoln. HE DID work his way up from nothing to lead this nation but his face has been on the cent for almost 100 years now and looks like it will continue. Most of our coins have really become boring and stagnant.

Bring back the Flying Eagle for a few years. It also represents our values as a country but in a much more beautiful way. Shame it only lasted a few years.

I certainly don't mean to offend anyone and the Flying Eagle is just an example (a good one IMHO) but I'm tired of seeing dead Presidents. There are other ways and other people that can convey our pride and values.

In te first one, Lincoln looks like Big Bird. Indeed, V.D. Brenner would be ashamed and the poor state our coinage is in now. I actually like the log cabin designs, but those won't won't get accepted. Why? Because they're too nice and too simple.

I've commented on this subject before in a seperate thread some time ago. I believe they are all poorly done and reflect artwork anyone would normally see in a high school art class. These designs could be much better IMO. A total lack of talent.

Agree. I just wonder how many people will be saying "So who is that person on the new cents(pennies)?" Others will be saying "Why the funny looking building on the reverse?"

Here is what that I would like to see as the reverse for at least one of their "new designs".

I'll vote for that design. I'd love to see the "wheat" reverse come back, even if it is only for the one year commemorative cent. It sure is far better than whats been presented so far.

Maybe they should have a design that commemorates how he had lost his home to swindlers abusing the legal system TWICE.
