Went through 4 boxes ($2000) of machine-rolled halves today...:

    1 - 1910S Barber
    1 - 90% Kennedy
    5 - 40% Kennedy
    1 - 1987P Kennedy
    1 - 1988S Kennedy Proof
    1 - 2004P

Pretty sparse results this time around, but I did enjoy finding the Barber...

    coin finds

searching kennedy rolls, dozens of '64-69, a few franklins and one walking liberty
searching jefferson rolls, 2 wartime nickels
searching the thousands of lincoln cent rolls, 3 1995 DDOs, a 1936 DDO, a 1944 D/S, and a bunch of wheaties in the teens and twenties. Still waiting to find an '84 DDO and '83 DDR. Also picked up a few star notes from my bank, nice unexpected find. And most amazingly of all, hands down.....no presidential dollar errors : ) Did, however, find a Washington dollar with an extended ray all the way to Liberty's arm on 3rd or 4th ray (same one featured in Coin World Magazine back in August). That's about it for now. I have 4 more $25 cent boxes to go through this weekend, so hopefully a few more!

1964, 1968 Kennedy. Nothing stellar, but not bad for only $100 in half dollars

I am having a sweet run of luck lately! I hit a few banks and turned up nothing but clad. Stopped at another, teller said she had $3.50 loose - the business teller speaks up and says "I have $60 worth". I only had $55 by that time so I took 5 of her rolls and the $3.50.

The rolls had address stickers with a name that sounded like an older woman and all the wrappers were new. My first thought was another CRHer or maybe a woman dumping them for her CRH husband. I just try not to get my hopes up. I open the first roll as soon as I get in the van: "Hello there Mr. Franklin!" All 5 rolls are loaded with silver! I hit the ATM, get some cash, and go back in for the last roll. I ask if she cashed in any other coins, but the teller says those have already been distributed. She says the halves are there because nobody ever wants them.

Well, the last roll was as good as the first five. Totals were:

    • 4 Walkers
    • 37 Bens
    • 15 90% Kens
    • 9 40% Kens
    HH,

    Sweet Sweet. Congrats Wally.

My lunch hour was similar today.

I went to literally 12 different banks (fun of being in a big city) and not a single bank had any halves in today....until the last one.

I always love hearing, "well I only have a few rolls." One was a loose rolls worth of 1964 Kennedy's with one 1967 in it, the other is what I'm guessing is an original bank roll of 1964 Kennedy's. I haven't decided yet if I'm going to crack it open, or let it ride.

No Franklins or Walkers, but hey, silver is silver :p

Yahoo, after 400+ rolls I have my first 90% half. Saw the reverse of it on the end of a roll, thought wouldn't it be something if this one is a 1964, and it was.

Found my first oddity today while searching half dollars.....a 1919 Great Britain one penny. A little thinner, but exactly the same diameter. Guessing its worth less than 50 cents, but its still a fun find for my dark side box ;)

When I found my first one, I remember finding a lot of them on ebay that sold for $5. There was over 80 of them in the lot.

    Another four (machine-rolled) boxes:

    Out of three, I got 1 Franklin, 1 2005-P, and 1 1971-S.
In the fourth, 20 Franklins, 15 90% Kennedys, 6 40% Kennedys, 1980-S, 2002-S. Also a 1998 Gold Plated Kennedy with "'Tis the Season" and a picture of Santa Claus on it..

All were packed the same day (Oct 17)... I'm still not sure how some boxes were completely bare and that one box was loaded. Oh well. First time I've had such luck out of a machine-rolled box. Guess they've all been hiding in this box, 'cause the last twelve cases I've bought have been relatively bare...

gatzdon: Any ideas how the rolling process works? Or packing? Or transport? I can't imagine that all the silver discussed it and decided to stay together in one box.. :)

It's not so much that it stayed together, it's just that witht he CWI boxes, they roll so much that it is very unlikely that you will get 2 boxes that were packaged right next to each other. I assume that these boxes are pulled in a different order than they are stacked. I also doubt the rolls are boxed in the order they are rolled.

One month, I saw more than 60 boxes with the same date. And there's no reason for me to think that I was the only one to get boxes with that date.

I would love to take a tour of the operation though.

That's what I figured is that they're rolling tons of coin at the same time... but I also would've figured they'd be stacked adjacent to each other. However, it's probably when the box is picked that they were "separated"...

How do you end up getting so many boxes? The manager insists on charging for each box ordered (which the awesome merchant teller never does), and I'm thinking he'd notice if she ordered any more :) Though I guess I could order through multiple banks...

Check for an 'H' or 'KN' mintmark, those are worth more than the regular 1919. (KN being worth more out of those two) Depending on it's condition and mintmark, it could be worth more than 50 cents.

    First:
post which bank this is (maybe I can help with that).

    Second:
    Do 2 things right now
    1. Goto your banks website and pull up a copy of their fee schedule. Make sure you get the page that says "Rolled Coin -- Customer -- No Charge"
    2. Take that page to your bank and complain, complain, complain. Be prepared to close your account out. Ask for the Manager's Supervisor so you can complain to that person as well.

It's one thing for a bank to want to limit your quantities, but it's another to charge a fee when they advertise their isn't one. Once you post the name of the bank, I will help you figure out who regulates them, (Federal Reserve Bank, Office of Thrift Supervision, etc...). Knowing where to send that formal complaint makes all the difference in the world.

After everything I said above, the reality is that you will need to find a new bank to order coins from. Take the yellow pages and start calling. When they ask how to direct your call, tell them you want to open an account. That's the person you spring the question on and ask if you can order 10 boxes a week of half dollars. As they are paid on commission, they will probably tell you yes. Make sure you keep their business card, open a savings account, then start ordering away.

Got a 1929S wheat penny out of pocket change today.
Too bad it has a hole right through the middle of it.
Looks like it has been shot clean trough by a BB
