I have finally finished re-writing my web page relating to the Britannic coinage of the Tetrarchy. It is in a narrative format that uses coin photographs to highlite historical events. It covers the institution of the Diocletian/Maximianus dyarchy in 284; the problem presented by the usurper, Carausius, and his control of seccessionist Britain; the establishment of Diocletian’s first Tetrarchy; the invasion and restoration of Secessionist Britain to the Roman Empire; the re-opening of the London Mint by Constantius and the production of reformed aes coinage (folles); the abdication of Diocletian/Maximianus and the establishment of the second Tetrarchy; the death of Constantius and the establishment of the third Tetrarchy; the turmoil attending the dissolution of the Tetrarchic system of government; the introduction and initial production of reduced weight folles at the London Mint ....... and so on. Here is the link: The Britannic coinage of the Tetrarchy
I had no idea you had an antoninianus of Allectus. I am green with envy. That is my grail 4rth Century coin. Yours is fantastic. Bet it must feel great owning such a nice example of such a hard to find coin.
These just might be my favorite grouping of Ancient coins and it's largely due to posts like this by @jamesicus
They are actually not too hard to find — and at quite reasonable prices — there are usually a few offerings on Vcoins. I have owned several during my collecting lifetime including one really superb galley reverse coin — I got talked out of that by a collector friend much to my eternal regret. But I guess we all experience that from time to time.
Same here, @jamesicus has gotten me interested in Roman Britain coinage, though my current collection of London mint coinage is still rather miniscule.
Thank you James, it was an excellent read. I really like the way that you have organized the text, it flows very nicely.
Nicely done Jamesicus. A very pleasant read that is very well laid out. I will have to go back and reread it soon to make sure I absorb it all.
I apologize to everyone who posted kind and encouraging comments for not acknowledging them earlier (here comes the lame excuse): I have been “up to my armpits” in fulfilling commitments these past few days and kinda lost my compass! I especially want to thank .......... @Alegandron @Sallent @chrsmat71 @GerardV @Orfew @zumbly @Curtisimo @Mikey Zee @ancient coin hunter ..... for taking the time to post comments.
I periodically, and frequently, update the content (including coin photos) on this page - I just completed today’s update. Hopefully it displays satisfactorily on devices with small screens such as smart phones and tablets - it does on my own Apple iPhone and iPad.
Since Allectus is out there, here are a couple of mine... RI Allectus 293-296 CE AE Ant PAX RI Allectus 293-296 AE Quinarius London Virtus Galley AE17 2-3g S 13870 RIC 55
Thanks for those pics @Alegandron - I like that RIC 55 patina - nice portrait and a decent galley on the reverse too.
