hello guys, here is some news for collectors of coins from India. The Reserve Bank of India issued Five Rupee coin commemorating 150th birth anneversary of Bal Gangadhar Tilak this year. And immediately after issueing, the coin was withdrawn because of a glaring mistake. It is written 'Bal Gangadhar Tilak Ji' in Hindi letters.. Usually, the 'Ji' is not used with Tilak. But, as a mark of respect to this great freedom fighter, we can accept it.. Still, the 'Ji' is not an independent word. It should have written 'Tilakji' and not 'Tilak Ji'. Anyway, almost all the 20,00,000 coins were withdrawn and a few of them were already issued as souvenirs to the Tilak family to be distributed. This coin has got the potential to be another rare coin from the Republic of India. Unfortunately, i'm yet to secure a coin for my collection.. but i got a scan of the coin..
Hello guys... atlast, I got one error Tilakji coin for Rs.4000/- (nearly $100) from a dealer. I was lucky enough to get this one cheaply. There was a mistake in my previous post about this coin. Infact, the Prime Minister of India released the coins in Delhi and the mistake was found out there itself and corrective measures were taken immediately. So, the coins distributed to the Tilak family after that were not error coins. That means, the mintage of this coin is lower than we assumed. Normally, a small quantity of coins will be distributed to the public on the date of issue. It will be anything from 500 to 10000. And thats it. It happened once in 1992. The 2 Rs coin commemorating "Land Vital Resources" was released on the date of issue. Only 500 were issued and no more of these coins came to light again!! The market price of a single "Land Vital Resource" coin is around Rs.75000/- (around $1800) now. So, I think this error "Tilakji" coin will also become a hot commodity in future.
spiral you have been had i got the same for 30rs which was not even a dollar whats more its BU unfortunately it is still in india i should have bought 100 pieces if i knew someone pay 100$ for them
Spock, can you post a picture of the coin you've got? I think that must be the common coin which will be less than a dollar as you mentioned.. And if you got the error coin, then you're really lucky.. :thumb:
Congratulations! How about posting an image of the error coin you purchased as well as the regular coin from circulation. Regards, Ballabh Garg
the coin is in india with the rest of my collection ill try to remember to take pics when i get there. from what iw as told the regular coin wasnt even released tot he public when i was there. i have seen many good coins there going for a song those dealers dont really know much they just try to inflate prces when u ask them somethign thinking its valuable i managed to get a plus coin from 2005 with an error for a dollar hahah there were also some other great coins that came my way
here's the scans of both the common coin and the error coin. The first one is the common coin and the second is the error coin. I've put an arrow on the place where the error can be noted..
