1863 indian head cent has ? on it

    i do not know how to describe this i bought a punch of indian head cents one off them was heaver than the rest so i put on scale was 4.6 gm and i check the thickness it was 2.07mm the year on it is 1863 but the strange thing is on the reverse were below the reef is a mint mark s i could not get clean to see i tried my bet way to clean it but no use we will see what i am talking about if any ca suggest a cleaning method let have it please here a scan 1863 indian head cent.jpg 1863 indian head cent.jpg reverse.jpg

    That's a nasty looking damaged Indian Head Cent. I would not bother to clean it. Cleaning won't help :yack:

    do not waist my time on cleaning it but did you notice mark on reverse where the mint mark thanks any way

    there was no other mint making these until 1908, that is the end of a ribbon tying the wreath together.

    The only MM on IHP is 1908 S and 1909 S.
    There's nothing there but the stuff that dreams are made of.

    i am not an expert on any thing in coins or numismatic but i am not blind i still can see and tell the difference between a mark and a ribbon and i do know there was no mint mark until the 1900 i figure you guys know about this more than me so i could learn one thing or two i was to post a scan but it was too big it did not load i sse if i cut down

    What you circled is the ribbon end. Compare it to a better condition coin.

    i find out today i am still a first grader still have a very long way to go i am sorry if i jumped the gun a little and if i every offended any body please accept my sincere apology and please forgive me i am still the first grader thank you all

    you have an 1863 which is copper/nickel... and as stated, no mint marks till 1908...your coin is worn but normal..and they are thicker than the post 1864 bronze coins

    Composition 1859 - 1864: 88% copper, 12% nickel (copper-nickel)
    1864 - 1909: 95% copper, 5% tin and zinc (bronze)
    Weight 1859 - 1864: 4.67 grams
    1864 - 1909: 3.11grams
    Weight Tolerance (+/-) 1859 - 1864: 0.259 grams
    1864 - 1909: 0.290grams

    No problem Khalil, We all have to start at some place :) It is always stunning to find one that has a mint mark such as the 1908-S or 1909-S. After long searching, I had to trade for them. Welcome, we can help. Jim

    What you say we see is the end of the arrows. What you say you see is the end of the ribbon.
