Well today I found some time and pulled out my new copy of the Cherrypicker's guide Vol. 2 along with my Washington Quarters. As some of ya'll might know I'm trying to work on a set of AU/MS Washington Quarters mostly slabbed. So I pulled out my NGC's and set to work. I knew that I had 2 nice 1941-S quarters but I didn't know if they were Large S or Small S....well a found out that my NGC MS63 is a nice Large S and my MS66 is a small S!! I'm glad to find that I have at least one Large S!!!!! Last but not least I was reading about FS-25-1943S-501, (or the 1943-S Trumpet Tail MM) and remembered that I had a 1943-S somewhere---I found it and sure enough it fits right into the comments and photos!! They said that as of 04/02 there were only 3 Mint State specimens known.....mine is graded NGC MS66!!! The book says that CONECA doesn't have this one listed...do ya'll know why? I'm thinking about sending it to James Wiles and letting him check it out. Well I guess that is all I'm going to find today!! Maybe tomorrow I'll check out the book some more if I get some time!! Speedy
I wrote on the CONECA board and hope that James will reply and tell me if he has time where he could view these. If he does I'll send these out here in the next few weeks! Speedy
I know it isn't the best but here is a photo of the Large S. The coin is graded MS63 and has a dark tone to it so it's kindof hard to get a clear photo. I know that more than likely the price guide that the Cherrypicker's guide has is no good but does anyone know if there is any added value to the Large S variety? Speedy
With only 3 MS examples known - hard to say if there is extra value since there wouldn't be a market for the variety.
The 3 MS examples known is for the: it is the one not listed by CONECA that I hope to send to James Wiles.....I guess this would be a time when the only way to find out the value would be to sell it... The one I was asking about above was the better known variety on the 1941-S...with the Large S mintmark. I found where Heritage sold one graded AU and on at a much higher grade but none for MS63. I guess the hunt goes on.... Speedy
So do I. I'm still waiting to hear from James as maybe he has already seen this variety and doesn't agree with it. Speedy
I heard back from James. He disagrees on the Large S and the Small S. I'm picking his brain right now and trying to find out if he disagrees with the photos from the CPG or if there is more than one variety of the small S. He says he has some pic's somewhere that I hope to see some. I wrote him back and asked again if he had a reason for not adding the other variety to the CONECA Listing. Speedy
Alrighty---I heard back from James and he didn't know what variety I was talking about when I asked about the last one I found that wasn't listed in the CONECA listings. So I'm hoping to send that one out. As for the 1941-S quarter I learned from another collector friend a nice bit of info that none of the guides tell you. The one in the photo above is a SMALL S mintmark I thought this was interesting since none of the guides that I know of list this PUP....nor the fact that the small S is both clear and filled. Seems that it is a fact that could be used... Speedy
