... carbon and oxygen: nuclear fusion in the interior of stars
... iron: supernovas of stars that occurred long ago and far away
... gold was likely made from neutron star collisions

Yep. The whole "we are stardust" thing can be quite overwhelming if you think about it.

It's good to keep the ecological impact of PM mining and extraction in mind -- but, WOW, the mess their original manufacture made! Reducing whole solar systems to ions and dust, if not subatomic debris...

And some day when the sun becomes a red giant and swallows up the earth, all your coins, and every atom in whatever your body has become, will be totally vaporized and assimilated.

Which will be chalked up to collateral post mint damage.

Funny relevant topic. Scientists just witnessed the collision of two neutrons stars, creating tooonss of gold and iron!

Entire multiple earth-size planet equivalent amounts of gold and platinum; it's beyond mind-boggling!

Taken on a relative universal scale, the inter-galactic value of those two "precious metals" just dropped to below that of earth rocks.

Careful now or you're going to start "thinking". :) And once you start thinking, well all sorts of weird things begin to happen. For example, when viewed from the proper perspective, even an earth bound perspective, it soon becomes obvious that - it (the inter-galactic value of those two "precious metals" just dropped to below that of earth rocks.) always has been.

You see, what is more valuable, plain ordinary dirt or gold and platinum ? Plain ordinary dirt is what keeps all life on earth living. Plain ordinary dirt is what allows plants to grow. And plants not only produce the oxygen we breathe they also provide the food we eat in one way or another and have a profound influence on our weather. All of which are things that keep us alive.

So what's more valuable - plain ordinary dirt, or gold and platinum ? Which one has true intrinsic value ? ;)

Maybe not, but gold and platinum don't keep you alive - dirt does !

I wasn't arguing with that. Dead things help keep us alive.

So what about the requirement that all gold used in US coins originates in the USA?

In this you are absolutely, 100% correct...you certainly can't breathe, drink, eat, or grow anything in gold. :greedy:
