I agree about the Saturn V . . . I just don't like the design among those 18 which shows the Saturn V.

I also dislike the intricate, "busy", designs.

The reverse side is shown in the link above. Here it is:

The silver and clad coins are essentially the same design (except for the denomination of course).

Probably will all be terrible as well.

Beautiful coins, and would that they were replicated in equally nice but more reasonably-priced silver versions. Platinum, while indeed being less expensive than gold, is still quite a bit too dear for those of us oldsters who happen to be somewhat involuntarily but ultimately realistically constrained by our "livin' large" (not!) Social Security allotments. Well, heck, they never promised us a rose garden.

The boot print was OK. But there's not enough going on.
Don't they have access to better artists than this?

The artistic competence issue I can't address fairly since I'm not in any way familiar with that particular community, but be that as it may as of this moment I do think the final choice will most likely come down to being between the "Saturn V" and the "bootprint" images. Essentially, what we have here is a matter of the impressively complex competing with the intriguingly simplistic, and we can perhaps also assume that both preferential schools of design, i.e. the one tending to the elaborate on the one hand and the other leaning to the minimalist on the other, each have a sufficient population of dedicated adherents to quite possibly result in making this decision end up going right down to the wire. Or, the powers that be could simply pull the rug out from under us and serve us up a nasty surprise by picking the likes of, for example, either "ghost suit" or "binocular girl." We shall see what we shall see.

@Virginian Thank you for pointing that out.

The somewhat uneasy juxtaposition of images pictured, that of a faceless man dwarfed by a looming machine on one side and by a large flag with a huge dollar amount above it on the other, is, I venture to say, a rather unfortunate if unintended vision of the place of the individual in the "big picture". Not exactly what one would call an awe-inspiring panorama of the scope of human achievement.

I really am not fond of any of the space coin designs.

Whatever happened to simple, but bold?

That is precisely the question more than a few of us here in our little numismatic fellowship seem to be asking.

This stuff coming from this coin committee are getting more and more cartoonish with each passing design.

It's comforting to know that I'm not alone in thinking exactly that.

Another problem is that I can't really see any of those designs working well on a concave surface. For example take those Saturn V designs, what is that rocket going to look like as it runs across a concave surface?

I was thinking exactly the same thing. Any rectilinear design will suffer.

I don't like novelty-shaped coins. The convex baseball was fine, I guess, and I suppose the reflection-in-a-convex-faceplate design is also a good choice for this form factor -- but I still don't like it.

The baseball ended up being amazing. For this one the eagle coming around the planets with the writing above and below should work out alright, but it doesn't seem like they took the shape into account a whole lot for the submissions. It's probably going to be the boot like Chris thinks and then we can spend next year talking about what a let down it was

Regardless of which design they chose, hopefully Manny Klein will get his deserved recognition.

    LOL!

I actually like the reverse design EXCEPT for the unfortunate inclusion of the denomination and its even more unfortunate size and placement.

A curved boot would be weird.

Agreed, but they all probably will at this point

Perhaps next they'll take it to the illogical extreme and make a coin in the shape of a mobius strip.
