Ok, bare with me and my picture taking ability. The camera batteries are going dead and I am still learning how to properly light. There is yellow toning on the coin, but these pics make it look a little more abundant than what it is. Also, the fields have quite a bit more mirror in hand than the pics reflect. (no pun intended) Oh, the marks across the obv are in the toning, not scatches or a scrape. So here she is. I think I am growing fond of her.
I'm glowing ! *takes pregnancy test* *negative* Ok, that's not it. It must be the coin. Thanks for the compliments.
rotobeast, That is one super nice Trade Dollar with a superb strike and superb details! I can possibly see where the Graders might overlook some of the rim bumps and dings and grade it MS-64 or maybe even an MS-65! Frank
Just curious, what is the obverse a picture of? Yes I see it is a woman but who? It looks like a scene from ancient rome, note the clothing.
Back in the good old days when the Trade Dollars were minted, US coins had artistic designs. The lady on the TD is representative of the allegorical "Liberty".
Roro: Nice coin! I hope that you didn't buy it on eBay from a dealer in mainland China! (Just kidding).
Im sorry to say this but Im almost 100 percent positive that this coin is a fake! Just kidding , I dont usually see nice examples of these ,mabey because I usually only look around ebay. I love that yellow color
I'm not sure I understand how this would represent liberty. Anyone want to explain? I could see how an image of breaking handcuffs for example or signing the declaration of independence would represent liberty, but I don't know about this. Maybe it is representative of something else?
Thank you all. Dang, WoodenSpoon Boy, you about had me. The page was in the perfect position that your first sentence of your post was all that was showing at the bottom of my screen. I was thinking "you got to be kidding me !"....LOL The yellow color has grown on me. It just feels as if that toning assures me further that it a good original coin. Thank you Frank. I'm actually considering joining NGC's Collectors Society to be able to send this in for grading. It will be my first submission for grading, unless someone offers me a nice sum for it first. If it would make an MS-65, I would just faint.
i would consider sending it to ncs instead becuase i see some hairline scratches on the obverse leading e to believe it was cleaned at one point
One nice coin,in fast she's beautiful. I just started studying my '78 s last night and found this page about trade dollar types. hope you could use it. http://www.funtopics.com/fun_topics_v44n3_vigliotta.html
If you are an ANA member or have an Ebay user ID then you don't even need to join the collectors society!! Speedy
Jako, It is possible that the coin was cleaned at sometime in the past but I really don't see any evidence in viewing the current pics! Also, Rotobeast stated "Oh, the marks across the obv are in the toning, not scatches or a scrape". IMHO, the lines on the Obverse which do not really appear to be scratches, were probably caused by a plastic slide-out cover used in some of the Coin Albums to keep the coins in place. The coin probably resided in one of these type albums for many years and sometimes when the plastic has scratches on it and the coin is in contact with it for long periods of time, it will cause normally East to West toning lines on the coin depending upon the coin's orientation in the album. Yes, sometimes the plastic will scratch the coin when it is slid in and out many times but hopefully this was not the case with this coin! Frank
