I know that alot of the members here know a bunch about coins, and I know that every newbe that comes along asks the same question. "Whats my coin worth".
So I hate to be one who does just that, so I will ask the question what can you tell me about an old coin I was given as a kid.
The Coin details: Front side. VTRAQUE VNUM (some little swirly design) M (another little swirly design) 1764. In the center of the coin. A pillar then a crown ontop of 2 globes, the globes seem to be on a beach with water below that beach, on the right side is another pillar with a crown on top.

The oter side: Around the outside, CARLOUS III D. G. HISPAN ET IND REX
In the center left side a capital M over a capital F. A shield in the middle devided into 4 quadrants with a castle in the top left and the bottom right, a lion facing left in the top right and bottom left, another smaller shield in the center of the larger shield with what apears to be 3 fleur-de-lis, ontop of the large shield is a large crown, on the right side is a little swirly stamp with a 8 below it then another little swirly thing.
Well thats it, It seems to be silver, and its kind of dirty I did not know if I should clean it and if so what would be the best thing to clean it with.
By the way does anyone know what its worth? Sorry I had to ask.
    Thanks for your time.

    Hi Brad,
I moved your post out to its own thread that way more people would see it and maybe be able to help you.

It sounds like a Reale. What fraction I don't know without a pic. They usually consisted of two pilars and does the M happen to have a small O above it? That means it was minted in Mexico City. Of course, without seeing it, it could be something all together different.

Like hontanai said, NO CLEANING. And it does sound like some sort of Reale, an old spanish coin. Could be worth some money, need pictures to tell how much.

Hi Brad & welcome to the forum, Please dont clean your coin as it would ruin the value of it. If you can scan it please do post a pic as it would make Iding the coin that much simpler.

    Thanks to all!

Thanks! I will not clean it, and I will scan it in the next couple of days. It would be sweet if it was worth something. When I was a kid I showed it to a man at the local bank and he said he thought it was probable worth less than $10.00, although in retrospect I do not know if he actually knew anything about it or not.

welcome to the forum! Look forward to pics!

cleaning coins is like taking a brillo pad to a brand new sports car.... it just kills it!

I have a feeling that its worth more than that, but we need to see it to be sure.
