    Hi,

Although I tend to behave like the proverbial kid in a candy store when it comes to ancients, I do exercise some discipline about what I collect:

This is my current wish list as best as I can express it:

    1. Philip II of Macedon "young man / horseman" bronze coins. I am collecting these. I will rarely say no to one of them provided it is in reasonable grade (VF and above, with control mark(s) readable).
    2. Philip II AR Tetradrachm in aEF to EF. For whatever reason I have never owned one.
    3. Sestertius of Faustina I in aEF to EF. I am a fondness for coinage issued in her name but do not have any in higher grades.
    4. Antioch tetradrachms. I own one of the best Domitian Tetradrachms that I have ever seen (photo below) - and yes I am biased because I own the coin below! Budget allowing, I would like more tetradrachms from Antioch, in comprable grades or higher, of other emperors. I also have Otho and Nerva.
    5. Antioch SC bronze coinage. I had a huge lot of these over a decade ago when I bought a wholesale lot from someone. I then parted with it and it has come to be one of my few regrets. I have become fascinated with this coinage since recently picking up a copy of the book by Butcher.
    6. Lysimachos tetradrachms. I own a few of these but none in high enough grade to write home about. I would like more.
    7. Alexander tetradrachms. I could comfortably just collect these if I had a big enough budget to work through them - there are just too many! On my immediate wish list is a Temnos tetradrachm of comparable grade or higher to the one in my avatar. As mentioned in another thread, I used to own the one in my avatar but parted with it and now have "seller's regret".
    8. Roman Imperial with nice portraits. I am not trying to complete any set. The Roman Imperial coins I buy are the ones which for some reason call out to me.
    9. Greek coinage. Same as Roman Imperial, I will buy ones which call out to me. Sometimes they might be common bropnze coins. Other times they might be expensive silver coins. Hard to narrow this down into a wish list.
    10. Gold coins are for some reason not on my list. I have come to realise it is not just budget related, I do not have a particular attraction to electrum or gold coins.

Here is my example of a gold Dinar of Saladin. They do come up every once in a while. However, he is a popular figure so if you see one...grab it. Good luck.

This 1745 George II Lima Half Crown arrived yesterday. It may not be a high-grade example (they cost a lot more than the $NZ195 this cost) but it is certainly good enough and I can cross it off my list!

I’m with the “spur of the moment” crowd. Originally, it bothered me that I didn’t have a list of coins to buy.

    Now I revel in it.

If past history is any indication my next purchase will be something from the next JA auction.

    Most recent "newp" (new purchase).

Iran (Persia): gold toman of Fath Ali Shah, AH 1233 (1817)

Next, and likely to be purchased within the next 24 hours:

Spanish Netherlands (Brabant): copper jeton (rechenpfennig) of Charles II, "Confidence in Divine Protection", 1671.

Edit: aaargh! The Spanish Netherlands piece has been sold, a long time ago, and the dealer forgot to update his inventory. So that one won't be happening. Bummer.
