Oh my god! Ebaynow allows sellers to bid on their own items! How can they let this happen? I know all of this because when i checked my listing, it gave me the option to bid, and i did, and it worked. How can they allow this???!!!???

Always suspected this...wife buys a lot on e-bay. I always believed that some one or some group was bidding up the prices on certain items.

They don't care, as long as they get their fees.

My guess is that you are going to get a warning about shill bidding from Ebay. Let us know.

I can see a warning in the works.
For shill bidding or "setting" your own reserve without paying for it.

When I started on ebay people did bid on their own auctions a lot. I had no clue it was still possible.

Did you cancel your bid, or let it stand?

I agree that they shouldn't allow it. However, buyers can tell by looking at the bids whether the seller is bidding. People should boycott auctions with bids by the sellers as a matter of principle.

    How do you know this?
Is there a link to the rules?
    Sorry to hear this.

Problem with that is, that above $200, you can't see that the seller is doing this.

For those who use ebay more frequently, correct me if I'm wrong.

Do you mean because the identity of the bidders is blocked?
I hadn't considered that. More reason for eBay to get involved.

I wonder if some people have more then one ID on e-bay or have a friend just do the bidding for them to get it higher

There was a time where they'd barred the seller from bidding on his/her own auction(s) -- a message came up if you tried to do it (complete with the shill bidding message), and wouldn't let the bid go through. I wonder what changed?

    hamman88 Spare some change, sir?

They can't allow shill bidding, it's against the law.

There are a lot of laws about auctions.

I think that's the most common method.

In terms of eBay rules, unless it's changed, a family member isn't supposed to bid on your auctions either.

I wonder how carefully this is enforced; but in the case of the higher priced items, there was some sidebar information supplied as to how many times a given bidder bid on a certain seller's auctions. Not sure it's still there since I've not been "Shopping Victoriously"* for a while.

    *A silly eBay slogan...

Some do have multiple id's. I do, 1 to sell and 2 to buy. Only because I do not want buyers to easily read my feedback and see what I have been buying or paying for things. I resell alot when purchase prices allow.

However, you do still have the same IP address, and must register with your name and address, so it will not be very long if you are bidding on your own items before you get a whoopin from Ebay. They will terminate ALL of your accounts and never let you back.
