...there were dirty old men. From detecting for years and being on forums this type of coin defacing happened in the past. Others have found this done on large cents also. I found this one a few years back at an old farm house. I didn't even know this word was used back around the time of large cents. From what I see and others have noticed on the detecting forums is that this was mainly done in the mid west states. edited - a bit much for a family site
I had one like this and was surprised the word was used back then also. However, I don't believe in the "Good Ole' Days", I just think they where the "Better At Hiding Smut Days".
Very interesting. I'm not suprised that the word was used back then though. A college history teacher told me that the "F-word" is over 5,000 years old.
I'd be skeptical of that. I understood it to be an acroym for an illicit behaviour in Vixtorian (maybe older) England.
you mean like that Pearl Jam album title from the 90's? lol Seriously, what is funny is when I receive phone calls or emails asking how much those "errors" are worth. I've even had people get mad at me when I told them it was worthless and then insist that it is a mint made error. Rather silly if you ask me.
That must have been a popular change to make on the large cent. I have one holed with that letter change.
I've been toying with the idea of putting together a date set of these altered pieces. :-D wouldn't that be fun?
For those who didn't see it, just think of what letter from 'CENT' could be substituted to make another word.
I can't give you a link to the one he had posted, but I can give you a link to an offcentered one in a PCGS slab Let me know if you want it.
Yall talkin about this?? I bought this one off my dealer without even realizing what it said till i got home =P [link removed] Yep, that's the one. Please no more links to that particular alteration.
