To those whom may not appreciate these enamelled coins I do understand as everyone has their likes and dislikes....but these aren't cheap.....these can run some serious bucks!
Everyone of those was a coin ,and here's something to rock your world.... I had a matched pair 1911-D $5 Indian they were cuff links at one time this one was sold to an Disney artists about 15 years ago
What's funny a good friend sent me this image the other night and asked my opinion I said buy it as I'm sure he could make some serious bucks on the flip.
Are those quarter or half eagles? Regardless, that's a lot of gold! (Assuming, as always, that everything's genuine...)
That's 8 half Eagle's enamelled and set in hand carved bezels and frames.......I'm thinking somewhere in the 10 to 15 K range, maybe more at hammer.
Ok so here is my question? Being that the OP coin was damaged by a punch could you not scrape a bit there and or do a silver test in the hole? Or are the reproductions cast silver? JON
My gut feeling about the OP coin was that it is a fake beat up to look genuine. The fabric of the coin is off. That coin's date is what told me it was counterfeit.
One of my favorite enamelled coins was a Burmese peacock . For some reason all the US coins always did look cartoon ish...... Morgans especially but the enamel coi s done at the turn of the century were truly works of art.
One hint if you're ever searching them use the English spelling enamelled in your search box. As these are largely collected in the UK. And the double L spelling will give you better results.
Hello, sorry to say, but i believe the op coin is not genuine. The biggest giveaway is the date, just doesnt look right to me. The details on the coin look soft, especially around stars, and the edge lettering looks way too beaten up as well. I agree with what someone said earlier, a counterfeit done up to look old. Also, the real thing should weigh in at 26.96 grams.
That's a great looking draped bust (if it's real). I would take the guess work out of it and get the opinion from a reputable local dealer. Dealers can submit a coin on your behalf at a lower cost for grading.
@Marsyas Mike & @Paddy54 - if you'll pardon a brief diversion from the original topic for a moment, and a return to the subtheme of enameled coins, there's a pretty neat enameled Seated dollar up on the 'Bay at the moment. I'm not bidding - and apologies for spilling the beans if one of you are - but I thought it bore mentioning because I've never seen one like it.
Wow as an Irish and I do like that.... I no longer collect enamelled coins. I do certain love tokens. My apologies for getting off topic by posting the enamelled coins. Just seeing the Op collection made me post my old specimens. I would love to have the one on e Bay however I no longer have an ebay or pay pal account. I stopped dealing with them years ago.....as a power seller and store owner their policies and greed made me say good by for good. Now I just use them to benefit me for reference.
