Checkered weathered appearance?

    First post.
I was roll hunting half dollars and came across a 1984 D.
The coin has a weathered appearance, almost like the checks in a piece of wood.
I tried photographing the coin but the texture does not show up very well.
The marks appear on both sides of the coin, but most predominant on the face.
I guess it could be damage, but it's uniform over the entire coin, even under the raised surfaces.
Any help with photographing it would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

I just noticed the edges of the coin are not defined either.same texture appears on the edges.
    One incredible looking coin.
    Thanks.

I am assuming something like this?

I know you said you are having issues taking a photo, but it would really, really help.
I am very interested in seeing what you found.

Me too. That's a struck through cloth you have shown. But the OP states it looks like checks in wood.. Whatever that is.

Checks in wood, as far as i understand, are like fractures on the surface where the grain has separated...

But, the OP makes it sound like it is throughout the entire coin, so it reminded me of a strike through cloth.

I guess we can keep on guessing until we get a photo of the actual coin!

The whole coin has the same grain type structure look just as you can notice on the bust.Photos from a phone doesn't do it justice.

Sorry but your coin just looks to be really beat up. Just a damaged coin.

They're called dents. Keep looking though; you're bound to find something amazing at some point :)
