    I have a 1959 D penny that looks gold I bought it a few years ago and the guy told me that is how it was made.I was wondering if it was fake.:eating:

    Wonder no more - it's as genuine as the nine-dollar bill I carry around.

    It was probably plated by a high school chemistry student.

    It could be gold plated. I have an electroplating kit for car emblems, but it works just as well on coins.

    What's the cost today for a do it yourself gold plating kit?

    Simple electrolysis equipment, big power source and a lump of gold. Not sure of price.

    Yes, but one also needs an electrolytic solution. It's my understanding that varying additives to the solution can help/affect the actual plating process. Finding a kit would skip a portion of the learning curve (for a price of course).

    If I remember right the kit was around $120.00 and included the tools needed and a small supply of the chemicals and some gold paste for plating.
