    Hey all,

I am have trouble deciding whether or not this SBA is type 1 or 2. I am leaning towards Type 1 because the S isn't as well defined as the Type 2's usually are.

    Thanks!

The type I is a rounded S, and yours looks rounded. The type II is flat looking.

If it helps, the 1981 Type 1 is the same as the 1979 Type 2 (clear, but rounded). The top of the 1981 S Type 2 should be flat.

The coin is headed my way as part of a larger lot purchase so let's hope it turns out to be the rarer Type 2 (fingers crossed but hopes not up). Thanks @CoinBreaux for the Dansco binder for my son.

The differences in the 1981 types are often what dealers and collectors have trouble identifying. The difference lies in the style of the mint mark punch. The Type 1 is the same punch used to make the Type 2 1979 coinage. The Type 1 has a pointed top when compared to a flat top of the 1981. The Type 2 has bulbous serifs in comparison to the Type 1 and the serifs do not touch the inside of the S.
