I have a state quarter (New York) that appears to have no mint mark. As near as I can tell, this is unusual. Does anyone know how I can get the coin validated and appraised without getting ripped off? It appears to be in very fine ondition with a little wear and surface marks from being circulated. I can post a picture if that would help.
I'm just guessing here but I would say that it is a grease filled die error. While it isn't rare nor does it normally add value to a coin for such an error, I would say in this case since it covers the mintmark that you might be able to sell it on ebay for a few dollars! I had one from NH and if I remember right it sold for maybe $3-$4. Speedy
A pic would help a lot if you can post one. Sounds interesting though. :thumb: I agree with Speedy, sounds like a grease filled error, but a pic would really decide that. Looking forward to seeing one if you can get it. :thumb: Phoenix
No mint mark quarter pictur Here's the picture. The coin looks reddish due to the light I had to take the picture in.
I clicked the link, and this is what I got: You can try using photobucket to upload your pic, that works for me. Good luck. :thumb: Phoenix
The problem is that you are using a link that doesn't end in .jpg, .gif, or any other extension that the software recognizes as a picture.
Here is the pic: And from the looks of it oldpopsie, it seems like a greased die error like said earlier. Very nice find. :thumb: Phoenix
a coin roller is what the coin companies like brinks uses to roll coins. sometimes when the coin is at the end of the roll, the machine scratches the coin when it is folding the edges of the roll.
Now that I know what I'm looking for, I tried using very high magnification (16X) and there is a slight ridge where the mint mark should be. I thank all of you for your assistance. Definitely a greased die.
