I know NGC does. I sent in my 1891-O Dime in paid the extra to have it say it was the 1891-O/S , it came back in the holder and simply said die chip. Appeared to me to be the O/S but they didn't agree with me
But was NGC right? Just because they just said die chip doesn't mean that it isn't the O/S. Never trust attributions from the top two TPG's, they are wrong too often.
I think they will just say it's a mechanical error. Unlike with grades where you really need to have the coin in hand, a variety will be apparent from the photos. I've bought plenty of coins online that have been attributed incorrectly: wrong variety, wrong type, restrikes attributed as originals, and originals attributed as restrikes. I even once bought a taler attributed as a klippe when it was plain to see it was not. I look at the coin and verify it myself. If the label is wrong, I send it in for free as a mechanical error. I think that's likely the best you can do here as well.
I have put back rolls and rolls of 1972 DDO Lincoln cents, telling myself that someday I will find the time to distinguish between them. I am sure I have some machine doubling in there too....
Update: PCGS called it a mechanical error and refunded the original grading and variety fee from months ago, and of course fixed it for free. They told me if I was the purchaser then I could use Guarantee Resubmission but since I submitted it the guarantee does not apply. BUT, the dealer I bought it from agreed to refund the purchase price after 8 or 9 months. Shout out to Low Country Coins! THANK YOU!
@C-B-D that is one heckuva coin dealer you've got! He is due for some good karma. I'd buy him a gift card to a restaurant as a show of appreciation.
