i was recently gifted 1882 1883 and 1884 CC Morgan’s in the GSA holders w/boxes and am tempted to crack them out and send them in to get graded. -Would you say that these are more collectible/sought in the original GSA packaging? -Would it be a sacrilege to crack them out? -Do any TPGs grade in the GSA holder? Thanks in advance
They are more valuable in the GSA Packing and NGC will actually grade them in the plastic packaging so if you wanna get them graded just do that. example(not mine):
Do not crack them out, unless you want the villagers at your door with pitchforks and torches. Seriously though, they are much more desirable in the holders with the original boxes and certificates of authenticity. NGC is THE most popular TPG for these followed by PCGS and ANACS. NGC and ANACS add a tamper evident ribbon around the original plastic holder, whereas PCGS puts another plastic shell over the original plastic shell. So if you are looking to get them graded, I would highly suggest NGC.
I like the idea of the ribbon since I can keep them in the original boxes with the COAs. Do you know if they do the same for proof sets? Larger label to fit all the coins?
Multicoin holders for modern proof sets have been discontinued from being very unpopular. PCGS has a two coin multi holder but the only chance from either PCGS or NGC for a full set would be a bulk submission I believe.
Only send in for grading if you think they have a shot at 65. These are already certified authentic and "uncirculated" just by being in the holder so there is no reason to spend the grading fees on less than 65 in these dates.
Had to wait till I had time to get everything out of the safe and lay them out. So here is everything I was gifted... ‘88 ASE, ‘86 com half proof, ‘82 com washington half proof, 2x 2006 silver proof sets, ‘86 liberty silver dollar proof, ‘86 liberty silver half and dollar proof set, 4x ‘71 ike silver proofs, ‘73 ike silver proof, and... ‘82 ‘83 And the ‘84
Long story long I gifted a Cyprus mint coin I restored to the father of my parish that was just transferred back to hospital ministry. We never spoke of coins and he said he was waiting for the “answer” for who he should give his collection to that would appreciate it. He said he wasn’t much into collecting but these are what he picked up through the years. I can’t say how appreciative I am to have been gifted his collection. He has been there for my son and I from our baptisms to my confirmation and I feel as though I should have gifted him a collection like this for all he’s done for us.
Unfortunately for me my grading skills for above MS63 is nil, but if you’d be able to tell from what you can see here would you send them in?
Nice gift and a good story. Really wonderful way to preserve those beautiful cons. And - and as to the original question - yeah, they're worth more in the original packaging, but since I'm a contrarian in many ways I prefer CC Morgans that were never in the hoard at all - like coins that were actually circulated or mint state coins like this one - since it has what is probably album toning on both sides it was likely, although obviously we'll never know - taken out of actual circulation at some point by someone who then preserved it. Maybe when the banks were letting people have them for their face value? Hah! Not anywhere near as meaningful a story as your collection, but I like the concept!
Thank you @fiddlehead and that is a pretty sweet morgan. I have sort of a soft spot for nicely toned coins and that would grab my eye at a show for sure. My only other CC morgan is a 78 that’s toned almost a pewter color. It’s not ms, probably AU53-58, but now I have the bug to start hunting the other CCs down and will be looking for nice toners. I’ve also had a soft spot for the 00 O/CC but if a sweet toner at the right price crosses my path it will have to wait.
Are you able to post better pictures from straight on that show a little more of the detail? From the looks I'd say definitely not worth grading. That's not to say they're not great coins, they are, just like I said above just not worth the costs unless they have chances at 65 which it doesn't look like from current images.
@IBetASilverDollar I was afraid you’d say that lol. I’ll get them out and see if I can’t take some without the glare.
I'd say the '84 would grade a 63, the '83 would grade a 64 and the '82 would go 63 at NGC. NGC seems to be pretty easy on GSA CC Dollars, especially the common '82 - '84 run. So not really worth spending the grading fees on them. But they are very cool. I love GSA Dollars.
