Actually that isn't where the crack would have started because the inside of the horses mouth is a high point on the die, or outside corner, one of the lowest places of stress concentration. Stress concentrates at inside corners. You can think of driving a car and negotiating a curve on a racetrack. All the cars try and hug the inside curve, which in this case is the outside of the jaw of the horse.
I don't have such a coin to look into its detail of crack by a microscope. I have this picture, posted by OP, I resized/enlarged. True, it is not exactly in the "lip" part of the horse, but, passing through its jaw. So, this coin should be renamed as "goatee horse" (lol)
Off topic, I truly thank you for your service. My father was in Vietnam as well.I admire your courage, I never served.
I'm not an EMT. I tried and failed. Apparently I don't like dead children. I only took the picture when I was an EMT student. I'd like to drop that, I'm here because I like coins.
I'm going to let you two fight over this. The horses head design is recessed into the die. The fact that a coin exists ("Spitting Horse") with a die break in a similar location (that does not reach the rim) indicates this is a stressed part of the die. In the photo, the largest part of the break is on the bridle across the jaw. IMO, that is where this particular possibly die began to fail.
I can make some more further comments, but, OP is frequently saying "off-topic". I just looked at the first post in this thread again and I couldn't catch the point of this thread again. If there is no any question to be answered in this thread, am I free to make some more comment?
Of course. I want open discussions, very much so. We have the same hobby. I talk too much, I reserve that right, after all this is a chat space. If I offended you, I'm sorry. Unfortunately there are a lot folks on this site that talk down to newbies...I get easily offended. The rest are super nice. So again I meant no offense. I'll give you my e-mail address or join me on facebook as an apology. And we can talk away.
First of all, it was my mistake, I read "EMT" only in your profile and didn't read the rest of whole sentence that says you left. Aside this personal issue, there is still an Emergeny connection in this "spitting horse" coin that we can talk here in the public about that, however, if you don't have any specific question about this particular coin, in that I am not expert at all. For example, are you asking its value of this "spitting horse" coin? I don't know its collecting market value. Lets say its value is $1000. Good?
I don't think it's worth that much. More importantly, I'm not here to make enemies. Or even arguments I just want to share what I've found and talk about it. I do get off topic, it's character flaw. It's never been my intention to anger anyone.
Why not. There is no standard "red book" in the market that determines the price values, particularly in collecting market. For example, a wealthy person may want to pay even more than $10,000 for this coin and nobody can say anything. But, if you are not waiting for such a wealthy person who may pay such an amount of money and if you are planning to sell it, what is your expectation?
I don't have an expectation honestly.Right now I just want to find special coins and talk about it. I reserve the right to speak and i RESERVE your right to speak. Hell, I'd fight for your right to speak. I'm in remission with cancer, which is a big bitch I'm only 48. Coin collecting is a great diversion. I'll make it through. But collecting coins doesn't take a lot of physical power, just brain power. And as always I'm off topic .I never got on this group to cause trouble.
You already found a special coin, well, two special coins. This "horse spitting" coin and that "2017 P" coin you mentioned in your other thread "Error of some type?" Don't you think that these coins are special coins? Ps: "Talk" is good, "Walk" is better, "Work" is best.
