It's not a gem, but still a pretty decent Antioch falling horseman coin. Constantius II Antioch, AE 2 21mm., 4,75g. DN CONSTAN-TIVS PF AVG, pearl diademed, draped, cuirassed bust right / FEL TEMP RE-PARATIO, horseman standing left, spearing a fallen horseman who is bearded, hair in braids, clutching the horse's neck. Γ in left field. Mintmark ANB RIC VIII Antioch 135 Feel free to pile on any Fel Temps.
Wow, the details are so clear on that one. I am not accustomed to looking at these and actually seeing a face and human features on the horseman who's about to be speared by the giant Roman. Usually he is just some blobby, indistinguishable set of shapes, to my eye. You can even see the horse here, a bit ... isn't that the horse's mane I see beneath the chin of the doomed barbarian? A pretty diminutive Shetland pony of a horse, to be sure, but "horsey" looking enough. Neato.
That is indeed a nice one. For some corrupted reason, I like the back-stabbing ones . I also picked up two FEL TEMPs this week, but they are 1/2 Centenionalis: Roman Imperial: Constantius II (337-361 CE) Æ 1/2 Centenionalis, Thessalonica (RIC 189) Obv: D N CONSTAN-TIVS P F AVG; diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Constantius II right Rev: FEL TEMP REPARATIO; soldier advancing left, spearing fallen horseman; Γ in left field; SMTS in exergue Roman Imperial: Constantius II (337-361 CE) Æ 1/2 Centenionalis, Antioch (RIC 153; LRBC 2632) obv: D N CONSTAN-TIVS P F AVG; diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Constantius II right Rev: FEL TEMP REPARATIO; soldier advancing left, spearing fallen horsman; ANB in exergue
Here's one of mine. Notice how when you're standing upright you can apply more of your body weight to the spear: Constans (Bronze) AE2 Siscia mint, A.D. 348-359 (2nd series) Obv: D N CONSTA-NS P F AVG A behind obverse bust Rev: FEL TEMP RE-PARTIO - Soldier spearing fallen enemy horseman [dot]ASIS[dot] in exergue; A in left field RIC 254 24mm, 5.1g.
That one's exceptional! Those heavy maiorinas (AE 2) are nice! You get those 15 mm reduced maiorinas of the mid-fourth century, though, and most of them are pretty crappy: Constantius II, Augustus AD 337-361 Roman billon reduced maiorina, 2.85g, 15.2 mm, 6h Alexandria, AD 353-356 Obv: D N CONSTAN-TIVS P F AVG, pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust, right Rev: FEL TEMP-REPARATIO, soldier spearing fallen horseman, facing soldier and extending left arm; ALEA in exergue Refs: RIC viii, p. 535, 82; RCV 18288; LRBC 2846; Cohen 47; Voetter 28
There are several of these in the "big bag o romans" from @Deacon Ray . This evening, I will get pics and post them. The fun part is they're all in my "attributed" pile, so everyone gets to look at some cool coins and point out my poor identification skills at the same time!
Got lots of these, more than I can say - about half are really crappy little ones, some are completely worn, some are OK, and a few are nice. I guess I should start organizing them by mintmark or something.
Thanks all! @Quant.Geek Both of those are very nice. @gsimonel That one is great! @Roman Collector It seems like they were in even more of a rush to pump out these. Even in good condition a lot of them were crappy like this one.
A few of mine selected for reasons other than grade (all Gallus AE2): Clashed die Amiens mint Trier AE26 (wide but thin - should this be called an AE1???) overstruck on a Constantius II 2 captives coin from Aquileia struck 72 to the pound and marked accordingly Cyzicus with lots of silver but not all that pretty to eyes accustomed to seeing these brown
Here's they are - I think both are Constantius II b/c the legends read DN CONSTANTIVS PF AVG and although it's tough to see in the pic the mint appears to be Antioch (ANH?). Although I'm not sure on the mint. I can find ANT, but not ANH for a mint mark. Between the app that magnifies the coin and the app that allows me to place them side by side, I have seen a little progress with pictures. (and yes, the reverse on both needs to be rotated. I will fix it and edit my post) Coin TWO:
I'm a dope - both reverses need to be rotated, not just the top coin. I edited my post to reflect that and will fix both.
What app do you use, Gerard? I really need to take better pics of coins. Totally dumb question, I've probably missed it at some point, is there a FH with a Christogram? Erin
The editing app is called Photo Editor- Axiem Systems and the magnifying app is called Magnifying Glass & Mirror-Mag by SensorBLE. There are a bunch of others in the App Store, so I'm sure others might have recommendations as well. These were both free.
All are great FH. I hate taking pics of silvered coins, definitely coins that would look better on video. Nice. You both are Antioch, both are RIC 132. I still need an AN Theta. Aquileia has one, similar to Doug LXXII FH Both are sweet!
