There have been a number of the medals of the Constellation. some made from the old copper plates replaced from the hull. and sold on the ship as souvenirs.
I once had one of the Constellation souvenir medals. I recall wondering if the concept behind their being made was precipitated by the earlier production of the Merrimac tokens that were made with iron, salvaged from that wreck. Although dated 1862 and originally listed as Civil War tokens in 1960, the Merrimac tokens were struck many years later as souvenir tokens. Here are pics of one of a few that I've owned ...
Yes, Bruce, this token was listed in the 1960's Patriotic Black Booklet. Later Fuld books pictured it among a group of delisted dies (498/499, I think). I could never comprehend how they listed this piece to begin with, unless they thought it possible that some metal from the ship was purposely taken just prior to it being sunk.
Thought this was a nice buy at $18 These North Carolina prison tokens were used from 1930-1970. Certainly weird enough to come home with me.
A number of states used tokens before going to the account method and now Imagine the use digital cards with the numbers/names on them
That is a puzzle, Bill. Either an error or just poor research...or no research. CWT or not, it's still a neat token. Bruce
