Auction photos would be a good source, we don't have to own the coins to have a good discussion.

    Ok let's do a cycle of @KSorbo 's idea

I think we should still give a grade, just no number.
    So:
*Post a photo with the grade hidden
*Say if it is G, VG, ... , AU, MS with no number
    *Don't reveal the numerical grade
*Post a price for the coin in the lowest grade (i.e. AU-50 price even if the coin is an AU-55 or VF-20 price even if the grade is VF-35)...this way we'll still have a basis on which to guess

So that would also involve guessing details or straight? For example, I would post my coin as "VG" with a PCGS price guide number for VG8, and the choices would be VG Details, VG8 or VG10.

That's the idea. I don't know how well it will work, but I think we can try it. If it doesn't seem to be going well, we can always go back to the original way.

By the way, @Johndoe2000$ who was closest on the 20c?

@Johndoe2000$ please let us know the winner of the 20c so we can move on to the new idea

Sorry, early to bed last night...

    The reveal...

I'm guessing there was a bit of a bidding war on this one due to the unusually high price it sold for.

The sale price was a whopping... $343.10

    So, @Beefer518 wins the point.

Would anyone have guessed that this one was detailed for smoothing???
Perhaps not telling why these were graded details would be better.
Needing to correctly say why it was detailed, as well as the closest price to win.
A details thread should have details coins though right???
I'm up for trying something new though, if you guys/gals are.
I'm in these because they're fun, as well as educational. Not to mention seeing the current values for problem coins.

So, let's see how the new criteria works out.

OK, so does that mean I get to try out the new form factor? It'll have to wait until I get home, and let's see if I do it correctly. :cyclops:

It's my understanding that as long as we post them for educational reasons, and not for financial gain, it's permitted.

I like the idea of guessing why it was detailed. That's probably more educational than just guessing whether it was detailed.

I would not have guessed that it was smoothed or that it sold for that much. I think the photo might have been intentionally blurry so that a few bidders thought the coin was nicer than it actually is. That led to higher bidding. Otherwise, I'm not sure why it would sell for that much (unless it is some rare variety).

    1864 2¢ RPD

PCGS for XF is $55 to $65

So I guess you guys have to guess if it graded details, what numerical grade, and what did I pay for it?

    XF-Details - Damage
    $35

The coin looks quite nice and I could see it being straight graded. However, I see that above the "AM" in "AMERICA" on the reverse there is damage (maybe someone gouged out that part or it was hit with some kind of tool). There are also some scratches around the "2" that might lead to a "scratched" designation.

Is it still the closest (sale) price guessed that wins the point? The rest is irrelevant?

I'm going with details due to scratches/damage. $30.

How about we grade as follows:
    1 mark for grade (i.e. if it's a 40 or 45)
1 mark for details or not details
    1 mark for price

Whoever gets the most marks will win the point for that round. Tiebreaker is closest price.
