"Phoenix21 wrote at PJStar.com: “I’m sorry, but this is just absolutely ignorant. The coins are no way near counterfeit. They are the real thing. They came from a United States proof set, made for collectors of coins. This is getting out of hand. If the proper research was done, you would easily have found out they are real U.S. coins ... I think the family has a right to go after McDonald’s and possibly here for all this aggravation and hype. I normally don’t speak up like this, but only thing I ask is find out the facts first before going off the panhandle with all this. Thanks for reading my two cents about all this.”

Love the comments sent to the paper. Everything from

“It is my experience that bank tellers are some of least informed people regarding United States coins."

    to

“The other sad part is that people are paying $14 or more for these dollars they will never use ... Some of you have heard about the ‘Dumbing Down of America,’ well, now you have a firsthand look!”
(Guess all of us coin collectors are dumb)

And the Macomb Police are still standing on the fact that these might still be cointerfeit!!! :headbang:

Anyway, way to go Phoenix 21 :hammer:

Has anyone pointed out to those idiots that the Madison dollars have already been issued as part of proof sets, but not yet individually?

Apparently, one of the qualities you need in order to be a police officer in Macomb is a willingness to ignore facts.
Will someone PLEASE fax the phone number of a U.S. mint to these defectives...ooops... I meant detectives.

I wonder if the coin "collectors" they are referring to are the bank tellers that turned them in.

What funny about Johnson's quote is...
First, I bought a silver proof set. Wasn't forced to.

Second, I wonder what the "paper content" is worth of all the notes in Johnson's wallet?

the level of retardation that these people are emitting is over the top. Who cointerfeits coins to spend at face value, where's the profit in it, get real.

    Please elaborate.

If you're refering to spending them I agree. If you're refering to producing them I don't.

"Where's the profit in it?" I think I get your point.

As far as I know, coins are rarely counterfeited for general circulation. Not for many years anyway. The most counterfeited piece of US currency is (or was before the bigheads, anyway) the $20 bill. It may be the $1 bill now, because of the security features on the bigheads. Less profit margin, but easier to spend. Either way, I don't think anyone would make $1 coins to pass when they could make $1 bills for just over 1 cent.

They confiscated about 3 million of them about 2 years ago - Sackies.

My point is that the most common reason there is for counterfeiting coins is to be able to spend them as currency. Think about it - the US Mint makes millions and millions every year. No they are not counterfeiting, but it doesn't cost much to make a quarter - about 6 cents. That leaves 19 cents profit for each quarter. 300% seems like a money maker to me.

Kind of figured that's where you were going with it.
As for the 3 million Sacagaweas I'd forgotton about that. Just what we need MORE dollar coins real or not.
