I see Bings "poor man" Leg III and raise an even poorer one.

It was a Secret Santa, so I can't complain as it's about the grade I can swing too.

Shame you didn't win them, but they're popular types and very nice ones go for crazy money.

Legio III Gallica was levied by Julius Caesar around 49 BC, for his civil war against the conservative republicans led by Pompey.

The legion took part in all Julius Caesar's campaigns against his enemies, including the battles of Pharsalus and Munda. Following Caesar's death, III Gallica was integrated in the army of Mark Antony for his campaigns against the Parthians. They were included in the army levied by Fulvia and Lucius Antonius (Antony's wife and brother) to oppose Octavian, but ended by surrendering in Perugia, in the winter of 41 BC. After the battle of Actium and Antony's suicide, the III Gallica was sent again to the East, where they garrisoned the province of Syria.

III Gallica was used in Gnaeus Domitius Corbulo's campaign against the Parthians over the control of Armenia (63). Corbulo's successes triggered emperor Nero's paranoia of persecution and eventually the general was forced to commit suicide. After this, III Gallica is transferred to Moesia province, in the Danube border.

Ken Dorney Yea, I'm Cool That Way...

I am starting to think that this new auction format is becoming the new norm. All it will do in the future is that people wait for the live auction instead of leaving a bid. So many people now try to snipe lots it amounts to the same as a live auction anyway.

Dont worry, there will always be more. These coins are not rare in general, just popular.

"Bummer" indeed. I just updated the initial post; the rest is fine and an interesting topic. :)

For future reference for all those who follow coins on Roma......I'm a bit slow and just realized this....but as most of you already know, they have two auction formats.....an E auction which follows the eBay format....highest bid at the last second wins etc. and the other with a Catalogue which follows the HA style bidding system i.e. you send your bids up to a predetermined time and then get locked out. Subsequent bids will be accepted only when the auction floor recommences a few hours (2 or 3) later. The buyer's commission on these subsequent bids is higher.

I got caught out this time as I'm still getting used to how their site works.

Bummer indeed but you guys have made me feel much better and I always remember....He who fights and runs away.....lives to fight another day.:D

It's a nice set of Antony denarii but if I may be a bit pedantic the first one is decidedly not FDC. It's an excellent example for sure, but FDC means it needs to be a perfect example in terms of strike, die state, physical wear and metal quality and this one has too much die wear and is too off center to meet that definition. The thing to keep in mind when deciding if a coin is actually FDC or not is really "could it be better?". If the answer is anything but "no" it isn't FDC.

Carthago Does this look infected to you?

Roma is notorious for grading coins FDC and, IMO, they almost always aren't FDC. Ignore it when you see it and learn to judge the coins by your own eye.

On the bidding, I've done the same earlier in my collecting career. The learning curve is really not a curve at all; it's full of sharp edges but you didn't really get hurt so an easy leason! :)

FWIW, I won the "FDC" - really EF / gEF LEG III. ;)
