I must admit to some excited encouragement from seeing this. I was disappointed to see later in the day that two nearby Walmart stores had no coins at all in their reject bins, though.
Picked up a dime a couple of days ago. I have gotten these before 100 S.Korean Won worth just under 9 cents. Almost the same size and weight as a quarter 5.42g 24mm (Quarter 5.67g 24.26mm)
Unfortunately, CS hunting is even more hit-or-miss than CRHing. I think the first four or five attempts I made netted me a grand total of one plastic dime. The upside, however, is what you do find has a decent chance to be silver, foreign, or other interesting items, since that's what is consistently rejected by those machines. Since those initial attempts, I've found a 46 rosie, a 43-S merc, a 67 kennedy half, and wide variety of world coins in my last 20 or so reject chute checks (actually the rosie was from one of the rare times I've gathered the courage to run my hand along the top of the machine lol.)
Coinstar machines don't take SBA dollar coins. It rejects every single one of them. I didn't find any I was just trying to dump some coinage.
I got a nice 1999 SBA that way. The President and Sacagawea weigh the same as the SBA. I got 2 Pres dollars also. One appears MS although it did circulate a little. The other day a quarter and a mutilated penny.
I have yet to find a dollar coin either in coinstar or metal detecting, or on the ground, or in the parking lot, or on the floor or anywhere else for that matter...other than the teller tray at the bank. I really wish they would discontinue the dollar bill and thus force the use and circulation of dollar coins.
I found a modern dime and cent UNDER the coinstar today...I also found a Canadian quarter that was in great shape and a 1998 American quarter that was as beat up as a soup sandwich in the coin return slot in the coke machine at Walmart.
I'd love to see dollar coins circulate as well, unfortunately I don't see that ever happening. Back in the 1830s some states even passed laws forbidding banks to issue notes of any denominations lower than $5, to encourage the circulation of silver and gold coin. The big issue is that the average Jill and Joe prefer notes to coin, due to the greater ease of using currency. Other than the bank, the only place I can think of to find dollar coins is our nation's subway systems.
I've had Susie's accepted. (Or at least it didn't reject them -- I honestly have no idea if it accurately included them in the total deposit). So it may have something to do with the machine vendor. I've used the traditional green coin start machines, but I've also used the blue ones as well as the grey ones they have at my banks -- but I don't recall if the blue or gray ones are actual "Coinstar" or if they are a different vendor.
bhh I found a lot of dollar coins metal detecting. 53 in a year and a half. And 1 more 15 years ago. Every time I bring one home, my GF is like: Who even has dollar coins? I did find an Eisenhower recently which was very exciting because it is so large. The halves are very tough for that same reason 8 in the same time frame and 1 more 20 years ago.
One of my source banks has a Cummins Allison Money Machine 2 counting machine. It's great, high speed and very accurate. It sorts the coins into separate bags of which I am allowed to purchase. I currently buy the half dollar bags. Awhile back I bought some small dollar bags and they were full of all 3 (Sacs, SBAs, and Presidentials).
