84d - ??? I'm new to this

    so separating my first box of pennies and saw this 84D. Hate my camera on this phone - I have a better one coming Monday - though you can't see it in images there is a d under the d too??? Ty

    Holy smokes. That is some mad zinc bubbles. Not error. Mint damage. The zinc below the copper plating started to rot and it formed a bubble splitting through the copper plating.

    Welcome to CT!!!

    While I tend to agree with Tyler. This does look like PMD to me as well.

    I just wanted to add if it was a D/D it would be called an RPM or repunched mint mark. Some people, like myself collect these.

    On US Lincoln Cents these can be found on coins minted before 1989 and are usually spotted by splits in the serifs on the MM.

    Check these sites for more info on RPM and other collectable Lincoln cent errors.
