I'm very new to collecting but I noticed this mint mark on one of my steels... is this a common error? Is this an error? Would appreciate any information on this coin
It looks like it could be a late die state Rpm. A reference if you don't have it. http://varietyvista.com/02a LC RPMs Vol 1/Repunched Mintmarks.htm
Thank you for that reference! I'm going to try to take a better pic of the mint mark. It seems as if it's been repunched? I'm very new to this. I inherited collection from grandfather and I'm trying to educate myself on some of these coins. He had this in a plastic bag labeled error. Along with several others. I'm just not sure what the error would be but the s/s mint mark
The date and MM area were also prone to Grease filled dies. If it is a Variety, check the coin thoroughly for die markers. http://varietyvista.com/index.htm
Die markers can be a scratch, a die gouge,, a die break, etc. they are unique to the coin and to each individual variety. If you were trying to attribute your coin above to a 43S rpm-002 you would need these die cracks in a stage C to be correct.
